Beck: NU needs a win at home By Derek Samson Staff Reporter The Nebraska women’s basketball team, which is coming off a four eame road trip, finally will find itself r—I in familiar sur roundings Friday when it takes on Creighton at 7 p.m. in the Bob Devaney Sports Center. After losing three of their last four games, Beck Coach Angela Beck said the Huskers needed to get back on track against intrastate rival Creighton. “It is important to get any type of wins you can get during the preseason,” Beck said. “We need to start getting some momentum, and it is a goal of ours to go undefeated at home, so I think it would be a setback for us to -li We need to improve and learn from our mistakes we made during those losses. I think it is a relief for us to finally be back home.” After losing to Southwest Missou ri State on Wednesday, the 3-3 Husk ers need to beat Creighton to raise their spirits, Beck said. “We need to get back winning and get some momentum rolling,” she said. “This schedule has not been one that is easy. We had three losses come on the road to teams that had won 24 or more games last season.” With the team’s youth, Beck said, the rivalry with Creighton isn’t as intense as in past years. w w “It’s a rivalry in a sense of the past and being in the same state,” Beck said. “But I have 11 underclassmen who don’t know much about Creighton. All they know is it is an other team coming to our floor that we need to beat. , “I don’t put a lot of hype on that this is Creighton. We know that Creighton is not a team that we can take lightly.” AfterCreighton, Nebraska will face Arkansas State for the second time this season. The Indians, who beat the Huskers in Arkansas, will face Ne braska on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Nebraska’s pressure cooled the Jays in the second half as Creighton hit only 1 of 6 three-pointers and 9 of 24 shots overall. But the biggest blow to the Blue Jays’ chances at an upset was the foul trouble of King and Vanderheydt ear ly in the half. Vanderheydt picked up his fourth foul with 18:02 remaining and King was whistled for his fourth with 16:02 remaining. Creighton led 30-29 when King left the game and the Huskers then went on a 17-6 run behind the inside scoring of Bruce Chubick and the defense of Erick Strickland. Chubick scored all 13 of his points in the second half, while Strickland — who finished with nine points, seven assists and seven steals—came away with five second-half steals. The Blue Jays answered the Husk ers’ run with a 7-0 run of their own to cut it to 46-42 with 6:49 remaining. But the Huskers responded with a 6-0 run that killed the Creighton rally. I had some effort in the first half, but I don’t think it was my best. “My effort was much better in the second half.” Nebraska coach Danny Nee said Chubick’s inside game played a ma jor role in the outcome. “I though Bruce Chubick was a major factor in this game,” he said. “He had a lot of tap-ins. He was above the rim tapping in and keeping the ball alive.” Chubick said outscoring the Blue Jays by 19 in the second half was a sign of Nebraska’s confidence. “We never hit the panic button,” Chubick said. “This team can score so fast. Only being down by five (at halftime) is just two possessions. “I knew if we put the effort into it we would win.
