Pollsters Continued from Page 7 than Nebraska.” Moran said Florida State deserved to be ranked above Nebraska in the coalition poll simply because of the recent matchups the Huskers and Sem inoles have had. “The games be tween Nebraska and Florida State have been no contest,” Moran said. “(Nebraska) has the same coach, the same offensive system and the same defensive system. Until they can prove they can beat teams like Florida State at the end of the year, they will not get people’s respect.” The Huskers, who lost 27-14 to the Seminoles in the 1993 Orange Bowl, have switched from a 5-2 to a 4-3 defense this season. Some critics say the Huskers’ six straight losses on New Year’s Day keep them low in the rankings but Sherman said the opposite is probably true. “Tradition goes both ways,” he said. “The reason they’re ranked this high is because of their tradition. Nebraska people think that it is their birthright to be ranked high.” - 44 Nebraska people think that it is their birth right to be ranked high. —Sherman Chicago Tribune sportswriter -*f - Iowa State coach Jim Walden de fended the Huskers earlier this week when he said Nebraska should be ranked second ahead of Bobby Bowden’s Seminoles. “I think a lot of writers have gotten into this ‘let’s do it for Bobby’ men tality,” Walden said. “I’ll be so damn glad when that guy finally wins one so we can get on with doing things the way we have done them for the past 25 years.” However, Sherman defended his fellow sportswritcrs. “(Walden) should try as hard toget i .500 record as he does knocking athcr coaches,” Sherman said. Tough tourney will challenge No. 8 Huskers From Staff Reports After taking five titles at the Wyo ming Open last weekend, the Nebras ka wrestling team will be hard-pressed to match that figure this weekend at the Omaha Open, Cornhuskcr coach Tim Neumann said. “I was pleased with the results last weekend,” he said. “If you go a level higher, the results would be drastical ly reduced.” The Huskers, ranked eighth in the country, will face competition from Top 20 teams in Omaha. The competition will include Iowa, last year’s national champion, Iowa State, Minnesota and Northern Iowa. “There are five or six good Top 20 Division I programs at this meet,” he said. Neumann said the No. 8 ranking was a surprise to him to start off the season. Revenge Continued from Page 7 “We were constantly working on different things.” Pettit said he hoped those things would pay off against the Sooncrs tonight and maybe again next Friday m the Big Eight tournament. If the conference standings stay the way they are, the Sooners and Huskers will meet again in the first round of the Big Eight tournament. The Big Eight’s second- and third place teams face each other and the first- and fourth-place team square off in the tournament’s first-round, Nov. 26. Pettit said his team would be ready for both matches if they had to play the Sooners twice in the span of a week. “We need to win them both,” he said. “We need to take care of this one and then take care of the next one.” The Huskers arc now in second place in the conference behind Colo rado with a 9-2 mark. The Buffs stand at 10-1. If it wasn’t for the loss to the Sooncrs, the Huskers would be tied for the lead. But that’s out of their hands now, Aspegren said. The Huskers have to depend on sixth-place Missouri to defeat the Buffs Saturday to tic for the title. “We just have to put the Oklahoma loss past us,” Aspegren said. Kansas golf champion recruited From Staff Reports Rachelle Tacha, a four-time Kansas state champion and 1992 Midwest Golfcr-of-the-Ycar, has signed a national letter of intent to pi ay golf for Nebraska, Cornhuskcr golf coach Robin Krapfl said. “Rachelle was our No. 1 re cruit,” Krapfl said. “She possesses a well-rounded game with no weak nesses. She has the ability to start for us as a freshman and become one of the top players in the confer ence.” Tacha, the No. 1 junior golfer in Kansas, led the Manhattan (Kan.) High School girl’s golf team to the 1993 state championship. Nebraska men’s golf coach Larry Romjue signed Ryan Neitfeldt of Grand Island and Judd Brewer of Lincoln Pius X to na tional letters-of-intent earlier this week. Neitfeldt won both the state jun ior match and medal play tourna ments in 1993. Brewer won the Nebraska State High School tour nament last spring. Brewer also finished 14th at the National PGA Junior Championship this summer.
