Emotion carries orchestra’s show Concert review The Warsaw Philharmonic Or chestra took to the Lied Center stage Friday night with a flourish of energy and emotion. Conductor Kazimierz Kord, who has served as musical director for the Polish orchestra since 1977, led the ensemble through a vigorous exploration of emotions. The first selection was from Andrzei Panufnik. a Polish com poser whose personal life was filled with strife and hardship. Those experiences were recounted vivid ly Friday in his Symphony No. 10. A disturbing piece replete with unhappy undertones, the sympho ny was punctuated by drum rever berations that were particularly chilling. While it was obvious the piece was meant to symbolize the dishar mony Panufnik felt with his home land, understanding this still did not make the piece enjoyable. For the second selection, the Warsaw Philharmonic was joined on stage by Ruth Laredo, a re nowned American concert pianist. Her performance of Sergey Rachmaninoffs Concerto for Pi anoNo. 1 in F-sharp minor, Op. 1, was physically enthusiastic, and her collaboration with the orches tra on this lively piece seemed sat isfactory to both. The high point of the evening was the orchestra’s interpretation of selections from Sergey Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Suite No. 1 and 2, Op. 64. Written for the Bolshoi Ballet in 1938, the music alternates between passionate romance and urgency, a variation Kord and company han dles exceptionally well. The selec tions were beautiful and an appro priate conclusion to an emotional performance. —Anne Steyer Kate Continued from Page 9 work to play both original and cover reggae songs. Being extremely organized, she said, allows her to take on so much, though she has had to make a few concessions: Jumpin’ Kate now prac tices two times a week instead of four. “You’re as busy as you think you are,” she said. “I have a lot of energy. If my body can keep up I’ll be fine.” As far as goals, Boner said she just wanted to keep playing with various musicians and to new audiences. She is quite the optimist. “I have a lot of faith in myself,” she said. “I think I could enter any occu pation and succeed. “If I put all the energy of teaching into my music career, it would sky rocket.” Jumpin’ Kate will hold a release party for “Loaded Gun” at the Zoo Bar on Nov. 24., and Cool Riddum will play there Dec. 8. Dance Continued from Page 9 Interesting ideas are not enough, they don’t make art. Like a poem that has some great and memorable lines, but fails to hold together as a whole, this evening of dance offered memorable bits but not enough substance. Where the show suffered was in its flatness of emotion. There were moments of lyricism, moments even of great beauty, but no passion — no pain and too little joy. Dorfman has said he wanted to bring the energy and vital ity of athlet ics into dance. He should know that no number of sprints around the stage can do that. — Mark Baldridge . tc use vfcgu /oust tens s»per*^^^n •ll «* but your prix$er Am. j With Visa* you’ll be accepted at more than 10 million places, nearly three times more than American Express.
