Missouri’s offense takes ball nowhere in 3rd quarter By Tim Pearson Senior Reporter Coming into its game against Nebraska, Missouri had been outscored 56-7 in the third quarter. That trend continued Sat urday against the Comnuskers, as Nebraska picked up a 49-7 win. The Huskers, ahead 21-7 going into halftime, came up with 14 points in the third quarter to Missouri’s zero. But the scoreboard wasn’t the only place M issouri had a Qtiill goose egg during me quarter, bluii The Husker defense pasted a zero in the total offense category of the Tigers’ stat book. Missouri coach Bob Stull said his team wasn’t able to move the ball at all in the second half. “When we had the ball to start off the second half, we were unable to move the ball,” he said. “We couldn’t get a first down, and we gave them good field position in the third quarter.” Stull said the Husker defense played far better against Missouri than in its performance against Kansas State. The Huskers gave up 489 yards passing to the Wildcats on Oct. 16, but still won 45-28. “People don’t give (the Husker defense) enough credit,” he said. “Kansas State is a pretty good team. Nebraska has a good defense and an excellent football team.” Tiger defensive end Rick Lyle said the Huskers came out inspired after last week’s game against the Wildcats. “Nebraska seemed like they had something to prove after the Kansas State game,” Lyle said. “It was frustrating because we weren’t making the plays against them.” The Husker offense also was a key in Ne braska’s win, Stull said. “They controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides,” he said. “It wasn’t anything fancy they were doing. They were pounding it right at us.” The running combination of Husker I-back Calvin Jones and quarterback Tommie Frazier hurt the Tigers, Stull said. “They make great plays against everybody,” he said. “They both are excellent players.” One instance where the combination of Frazier and Jones hurt the Tigers was at the end of the first half. With the Huskers up 14-7, Frazier connect ed with Jones for a screen pass that resulted in a 55-yard touchdown. Tiger defensive coordinator Skip Hall said he thought the Tigers had Jones tackled for a short gam on the play. “They just swung it out to the flat, and we did not re spond well,” Hall said. “A great back 1 ike Jones is going to do those kind of things.” Stull said Jones was de serving of his preseason All American pick and proved it Saturday. 1-*-' A great back makes them Lyle miss,” he said. “It was just a little swing pass, and he made more than one guy miss him. That’s not the way you want to end the half.” -M Nebraska seemed like they had something to prove after the Kansas State game. — Lyle Missouri defensive end -ft — “That’s why he’s an All-American candi date and a Heisman Trophy candidate.” Missouri quarterback Jeff Handy, who threw for only 104 yards after throwing for 424 last year against the Huskers, said outside lineback er Trev Alberts also was deserving of All American honors. Alberts had seven tackles and two sacks against the Tigers. “Trev came out and played a great game,” Handy said. “He’s one of the better linebackers I’ve seen this year.” Freshman comes up big as Huskers sweep Tigers for 19th straight time By Tim Pearson Senior Reporter Kate Cmich had played spar ingly in the Nebraska volleyball team’s previous 17 matches. But against Missouri, Cmich played a key role as a starter in all three games in the Comhuskcrs’ 15-2, 15-8, 15-7 win over the Ti gers in Columbia, Mo. Starting in place of freshman outside hitter Maria Hedbeck, Cmich, a freshman from River Forest, 111., had four kills and nine digs. Husker assistant coach Cathy Noth said Hedbeck was held out of the match because she wasn’t feel ing well. “We didn’t play Hedbeck be cause she was under the weather,’’ she said. “Cmich did very well for us. “We told her that she’s going to make some mistakes but she should just keep plugging away.” Noth said the match against Mis souri progressed like she thought it would. The Huskers won their 25th straight match against Missouri. Overall, Nebraska is 38-2 against the Tigers. The Huskers’ last 19 wins against the Tigers have come in three-game sweeps. “It’s what I expected,” Noth said. “We handled the ball well, and we distributed the ball well.” Sophomore middle blocker Allison Weston led the Huskers with 13 kills. It was the 14th time in 18 matches that Weston has had 10 or more kills. Weston also led the team with 12 digs. Noth said she was happy with the play of junior outside hitter Kelly Aspegren, who had 10 kills and a team-leading .643 hitting percentage. “Aspegren was just Allie (Weston) in kills,” she said. “She usually doesn’t get as many attacks as everyone else. It was a good match lor her.” Noth said the win over Missouri was a good tune-up for this week’s action against Kansas State on Wednesday in Manhattan, Kan., and against Colorado on Saturday in Lincoln. The Huskers have been prepar ing for the Colorado match ever since the Buffaloes defeated the Huskers in five games in Boulder on Oct. 13, Noth said. “Everything the past two weeks has been geared toward Colorado,” she said. “There’s not a practice that doesn’t go by where we don’t run the Colorado offense.” But the Comhuskers won ’ t over look Kansas State, Noth said. The Huskers defeated the Wildcats ear lier this season in Lincoln in Ne braska’s Big Eight opener. “We’ll be ready,” she said. “We just have to focus on our side of the net and working on different things.” “Our improvement is going to have to come in ball-handling. We have to get to get the ball to Nikki (setter Strieker),” she said. “When we distribute the ball, we can ter minate for a kill.” WET T-SHIRT CONTEST Every Monday 10:30 p.m. 1823 "O” Street NO COVER Tan. That touchdown took a lot of motiva tion put of them.” In the second half, Nebraska rolled to four more touchdowns on drives of 45,36, 59 and 54 yards. Frazier capped a three-play, 45 yard drive with a 37-yard touchdown run to open Nebraska’s scoring in the second naif.
