Bob Hazelton, a former professional boxer and bodyguard, speaks to students at Lincoln
East High School on Tuesday. Hazelton lost both of his legs because of steroid use.

"Let me go into the locker room
and I'll tell you who the steroid
users are," he said.
And, he said, those athletes

After taking steroids for 13 1/2
years, Hazelton said, he started
having problems 5 1/2 years ago.
He lost his left leg in 1986 and
hisrightoncin 1987. He hadaheart
attack only four months ago.
And he blames it all on steroids.
“It’s been a hell of a road to go
down,” he said. “We all know
there’s steroid use out there. I can’t
personally stop anyone from using
them.
“It’s a sad situation. There’s not
a safe cycle of steroids that you can
take without getting in trouble. Lots
of athletes and kids at 10- or 12
years old have died because of
steroids.”
Hazel ton said he didn’t hide the
dangers when he told of his experi
ences. And after losing both legs
because of steroid use, he figures
he can’t hide the effects.
“I get down to the nitty gritty ”
he said. “I don’t cut any slack.... I
tell it like it is. There’s too much
danger in steroid use.”

pic Leaf.
Somehow, 1 don’t remember any
Braves’ fans waving the Atlanta state
flag during the World Series.
And dtiring this year’s World Se
ries, I haven’t seen any Philadelphia
fans sporting a Pennsylvania flag or,
for that matter, ringing a Liberty Bell.
But you’ve seen the Maple Leaf
flying high everywhere. Let’s cut
the crap, Canada.
It’s time to rake in the Maple Leaf.
Bum the bacon. Melt the ice.
There are exactly zero Canadians
on the Toronto Blue Jays’ team. More
than 90 percent of the team is Amer
ican.
Another Blue Jays’ World Series
title wouldn’t prove anything about
Canada. It wouldn’t show the rich
ness ofCanada’sbaseball tradition—
a contradiction in terms.
It would only show that Blue Jay
owners have swallowed the slogan
American consumers spit on: “Buy
American.
Buy American. Beat Americans.
With Americans. Then, let all of Can
ada rally around the soul-selling su
perstars of the United States.
Only the professional softball team
masked as the Phillies can stop the
nonsense this year.
With gritty Americans like Paul
Molitor, Joe Carter, John Olerud and
Rickey Henderson leading the Jays,
the Phillies will have a hard time
bringing back the title.
Only true Americans like Phila
delphia’s John K.ruk, Lenny Dykstra
and Pete “Inky” Incaviglia can squelch
the flag-waving Canadians.
And it’s up to those guys to muffle
the drunk Canadian Dairy Queen
owner 1,000 miles away who is now
waving his flag, ripping off customers
and telling another ornery American
how Canada has better “oil, water,
natural resources and.. .and.. .BASE
BALL.”
What a crock.
