Wildcats’ solid effort no consolation for losing to the Huskers once again KSU quarterback sets passing record By Derek Samson Staff Reporter Once again, Kansas State played Nebraska close throughout a game. Once again, the Wildcats gained the respect of Nebraska players and fans. But yet again, Kansas State came up short and lost to Nebraska. After the Huskcrs extended their winning streak to 25 games over Kan sas State with their 45-28 win Satur day, Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said keeping the game close wasn't enough. “We needed this ball game,” Snyder said. “It would have helped the pro gram along a great deal. They’re good kids, and they deserve respect, but if Kansas State wants respect, they're going to have to beat Nebraska.” The W ildcats have put some scares into Nebraska. In 1991 .Nebraskaescaped Kansas State with a 38-31 victory in Lincoln. Last year in Tokyo, the Huskcrs jumped out to a 21-0 lead, but were outscored 24-17 the rest of the way and managed a 38-24 win. On Saturday, Kansas State cut the Nebraska lead to 31-28 with 7:44 remaining, but could not pull out a victory. Quarterback Chad May, who threw fora Big Eight-record 489 yards, said he would trade his big passing day and the records set for a win. “At this point right now, I’d rather give back all those honors if we could win,” May said. “It’s real frustrating, but I think we’re right on the verge and hopefully we’ll turn it around next year." Although Kansas State outgained the Huskcrs in total yardage 565 to 545,Snydersaidthcoffensivcdisplay wasn’t a good sign for his team. “Both teams moved the ball more or less at will,” Snyder said. “Offen sively, we moved the ball but I didn’t think we played very well. We sure didn’t play very good defensively or on special teams. On the offensive side we had some penalties that really cost us. “1 thought 28 points would be enough to win it. I guess it boiled down to we turned the ball over and they didn’t." Snyder said he knew May could have a big passing day. “I felt comfortable that we had a decent plan to come in here and throw,” he said. “We’ve thrown it well in the past against Nebraska, so we thought the opportunities were there for our passing game.” -44 It's real frustrating, but I think we’re right on the verge and hope fully we'll turn It around next year. —May, Kansas State quarterback -tf — May, who completed 30 of 51 at tempts, credited his receivers for his 489 yard?. And, he said, Nebraska’s attacking de fense opened up big plays. “They’re a man-to-man team and our receivers did a great job of getting open against their defenders. May said. “It’s a lot easier to hit your receivers when you have the type of receivers we do and with a man de fense. They arc susceptible to having big plays on them.” Snyder said Kansas State was an other big play or two away from win ning.' “I think we’re making progress, but I don’t know if this game altered that progress in anyway,” Snyder said. “We knew we had a chance to win it and it was iust frustrating to all of us at the end.
