Ghosts, experts fill conference

The “Enchanted Weekend,”
planned by the Fortean Research Cen
ter of Lincoln, features the city’s
ghosts and goblins just in time for
Halloween. *
The two-day conference begins at
4 p.m. Friday with a daylight ghost
tour of Lincoln. The bus tour departs
and returns to the Bethany Park Shel
ter, 65th and Vine streets.
Dale Bacon, a paranormal investi
gator for the center and guide for this
weekend’s ghost tours, said this year’s
conference was on parapsychology,
the branch of psychology that investi
gates paraphenomena.
The center, a nonprofit member
ship organization that investigates and
researches unexplained phenomena,
is planning events that begin Friday
afternoon and continue through Sat
urday evening.
Bacon said he expected at least
100 people to attend the conference.
Interest in the topic in Lincoln is
greater than most people realize, he
said.
Guest speakers Loyd Auerbach and
Martin Caidin are two of the week
end’s other highlights.
Auerbach is the author of three
parapsychology books, a consultant
to the Fox TV program “Sightings,”
and a columnist for “Fate” magazine.
Caidin is the author of more than
180 books, including “Ghosts of the
Air,” “Natural & Supernatural,” and
“Cyborg,” the book that became the
screen play for“The Six-Million Dol
lar Man.” Caidin also is a contributing
editor to “Fate.”
Friday’s ghost tour costs $5 per
person. It will be followed by a dinner
at 6 p.m. Friday at the shelter. After
the dinner, Auerbach and Caidin will
give presentations on ghost stories,
tall tales and “strange, but true” ac
counts. The dinner and presentation
cost $5 per person.
Saturday’s activities include the
Parapsychology Conference at the
Nebraska Center for Continuing Edu
cation, 33rd and Holdrege streets.
Topics will include psychokinesis
—-the ability to move objects with the
mind, remote viewing — transmit
ting accurate information through the
mind, ghosts and poltergeists. Cost of
the conference is $25 per person.
The events will conclude with a
nighttime ghost tour of Lincoln on
Saturday. The nighttime ghost tour
already is full. Bacon said, but open
ings remain in the other events.

conference only. Tickets can be pur
chased at the door or at the Fortean
Research Center, located at the Way

“We’ll find out where the most
common errors might be,** he said.
Beacon said he hoped financial aid
officials would not have to verify all
answers next year. Federal laws call
for at least 26 percent of answers to be
verified.
“What’s going to come of this
whole thing is faster turn-around and
processing," he said.
The next step in the program will
be to verify no more than 26 percent
of answers, Beacon said.
“We’re doing these things because
we’re interested in running as effi
cient a process as possible on behalf
of the interests of students."

In other business, the regents are
expected to approve the installation
of a new sound system at Memorial
Stadium, Milliken said.
The new system would include
two instant-replay screens, skyboxes
and televisions at the concession
stands. The system could cost up to
$811,000.

FM, 104.1, and KJBZ-FM, 106.3.
The Asylum, which opened Thurs
day, will be run for 16 days. The house
will be closed on Mondays. It will be
open from 7 to 10 p.m. weekdays and
7 to 11:30 p.m. on weekends. Admis
sion is SS.

When asked why there weren’t
more Lighthouse kids working at the
attraction, Allman said they had other
concerns.
“They arc more into survival,”
Allman said. “Some of them are liter
ally concerned with where their next
meal is coming from. They live tough
lives.”
