When she comes in, it gives us a little spark.” Pettit said he was encouraged by the play of Tonniges. “Kim has come a long way in the past seven to 10 days,” he said. “She’s really an experienced player and in the matches against Colorado, we’re going to need her.” Pettit decided to run a different system for the third game. Sopho more Billie Winsett twisted an ankle, and Pettit decided to keep her out of the third game. “I felt we needed to do that,” he said. “If (Maria) Hedbeck and Winsett can’t play, we need somebody who can play outside. “Kelly Aspegren is normally on the right side, but we moved her to outside hitter and we had twobackcourt people. We were planning to sit (Mar ia) Hedbeck, but we decided to play Kelly for Billie.” Nebraska jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but the Wildcats clawed back, tying the score at nine. The Huskers then pulled away by scoring the final six points of the match. Finley Continued from Page 9 use the emotion. If a fight breaks out, then the coach es immediately take the field and proceed to the home team’s end zone. But they won’tfight. Instead, they’ll play a board game. That way, the coaches can get involved in the ac tion, and players are protected from injury. Then, if they get all fired up, it will be over a game ofCandyland and not over a sock in the jaw. Picture this: Tom Osborne and Bill McCartney approach the end zone aficr Kevin Ramaekers accidentally late-hits Stewart for the 11 th time. Both coaches, naturally, are seething with the accumulated anger of their players. Now the fight ing is out of everyone’s system, and Nebraska has the momentum to go on and win. This rule would make coaches be come more well-rounded. Not only will they need to be great gridiron tactitioners, but they will need to be able to play a mean game of Parchesi. (AP) — Colo rado coach Bill McCartney on Tues day outlined a new team policy on fighting but will not make it retroac tive to those players involved in last Saturday’s bench-clearing brawl against Miami. Colorado was trailing badly just before halftime when the brawl erupt ed. Seven Hurricanes and five Buffa loes were ejected. The Buffs rallied but fell short 35-29 in the final half. Miami coach Dennis Erickson un veiled a similar new fighting policy earlier Tuesday but none of the mea sures will be imposed against those involved in Saturday’s melee. The new fighting guidelines for both teams include a one-game sus pension for any player leaving the bench area to participate in a fight. McCartney said he would also impose “severe consequences for any one who leaves the bench area if a (fight) should occur on the field.” McCartney did not suspend any players for CU’s next game which is against Missouri on Oct,,{L “1 looked extensively ait the film , and I looked to see if we had anyone , flagrantly out of control wberehe was | jeopardizing the health of oiners.” ( McCartney said in a news release. "4 just didn’t see it. I just in good con science couldnh ’suspend anybody unless I suspended everybody." Miami coach Dennis Erickson said virtually the same thing of his play ers’ involvement in the melee. Colorado president Judith Albino said she had met with both McCartney and Athletic Director Bill Marolt. “I am deeply disappointed by what happened...1 have approved the coach’s swift, strong and appropriate actions to ensure that no such inci dents occur in the future,” Albino said. Colorado senior captain Ron Woolfork said of the incident, “With the magnitude of the game, tempers flared up and it just got out of hand. We’ve learned our lesson, we’ve just got to move on." f .
