Brothers David, foreground, and Banti rteffa look to help lead the Nebraska men's cross country
team Saturday at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational.
Iteffa brothers share course again
By Tony West
Staff Raportar_
Back in 1990, David and Band
ItefTa had little notion of running side
by-side again.
The two brothers, originally from
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, ran together
fouryearsago at Fremont High School.
And once again, they are running on
the same team at Nebraska.
Senior captain David ItefTa is the
returning 1992 Big Eight cross coun
try champion. Banti ItefTa, who was
last year’s state champion in both
cross country and the 3200-meter run
for Lincoln Southeast High School, is
a freshman.
David ItefTa likes the feeling of
being on the same team again. The
brothers will lead the rest of the team
in the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invi
lational at Pioneers Park on Saturday.
The women are scheduled for a 10
a.m. start and men will follow at about
10:45.
“I’m happy,” David said. “It brings
back old memories.”
Banti Itefla also is excited about
running alongside his brother again.
“Dave helps me out a lot in every
thing I do,” Banti Itefla said. “(Dave)
tells me things I have to do to get
better. And having someone who re
ally cares is a comfort to me.”
With Banti Itefla’s talent and the
help he’s receiving from his older
brother, he should become a great
runner, cross country coach Jay
Dirksen said.
“Whenever you’rca freshman.you
have to prove yourself,” Dirksen said.
“But, (Banti) just fits in like he’s been
here forever. He has really adjusted
well.”
And the older ItefTa, David, has
really developed as a leader on the
team, Dirksen said.
Banti ItefTa said he hopes to grow
to the level his brother has reached.
“Dave’s a great runner,” Banti
Iteffasaid. “And hopefully, I can reach
the same plateau he has.”
Banti ItefTa has taken the first step
toward that goal. Although only a true
freshman, he’ll be among Nebraska’s
top seven runners this weekend. Dav
id ItefTa accomplished that same feat
three years ago.
But Banti Iteffasaid he’s willing to
nm in his older brother’s shadows.
And with the brothers pushing each
other, the entire cross country team
will benefit, Dirksen said.
“It’s always a good situation,”
Dirksen said. “We have the best atti
tude on the team that we’ve had in
years.”
Littleton

Despite UCLA losing its opener
27-25 to California, Littleton said
he was not disappointed with his
play. Last week, Littleton led UCLA
defenders with 11 tackles.
“I can’t say 1 was really happy
because the team didn’t win, but I
played pretty well,” he said. “We
learned in that game that we can’t
just turn it on in the second half. We
have to play hard like every down
is our last. We didn’ t do that against
Cal.
“We just got overexcited and
just started making a lot of mis
takes. That’s where we got hurt.”
Littleton, who collected 61 tack
les last season, will not have to
worry about getting hurt Nebraska
Heisman Trophy candidate Calvin
Jones. Jones’ knee injury will keep
him out of Nebraska’s offense for
the second straight week.
“I wouldn’t think it will mat
ter,” Littleton said. “They’re rated
eighth, so I’m sure they’ll have
someone step in for him.”
The Bnnn defense’s biggest
challenge will be shutting down
quarterback Tommie Frazier,
Littleton said.
Littleton said he would have
added incentive when he matched
up against Nebraska wineback —
and former Compton,Calif., Carson
High School teammate — Abdul
Muhammad.
“We have to look at Abdul,”
Littleton said. “We’re good friends
and I know what he can do because
we went to high school together.
“I will play against a lot of peo
ple from our high school in thePac
10. It makes it a little special. You
can talk about it later and hit them
a little extra hard during the game.”

later in the season before he knows
how good the Huskers are.
“We may find out a little bit this
weekend,” he said. “But it may be the
middle of October before we know
just how good we are.”
Georgia comes into the Nebraska
match with an 8-0 record. The Bull
dogs are led by a name that may be
familiar to Nebraska fans. Jodi Kruse,
the sister of former Nebraska All
American Janet Kruse, is Georgia’s
setter.
Louisiana State and Nebraska have
met three times, with the Huskers
winning all three previous matches.
Pettit said Georgia and Louisiana
State would provide the Huskers with
probably their toughest tests so far
this season.
