    Frazier, Jones still hobbled by injuries;
NU leads Big Eight in number of pros
From Staff Reports_
The Comhuskers, who have been
riddled with injuries over the first two
weeks of the season, had no new
injuries Tuesday at practice, Coach
Tom Osborne said.
“We had some contact and got out
without any serious injuries,” O^bome
said. “We ran some pass skeleton with
the first and second team and ran
some goal-line drills with a lot ol
contact. At least there was nothing
new as far as injuries.”
Quarterback Tommie Frazier and
linebacker Donta Jones both prac
ticed, but once again felt the pain of
""their injuries, according to Osborne.
Frazier’s ankle was gimpy Monday.
“Frazier’s status is about the same
as Monday,” Osborne said. “Donta
Jones is getting better.”
BIG EIGHT NOTES:
• The NFL began the season with
86 former Big Eight players on open
ing day rosters. Nebraska leads the
Big Eight with 21 former Huskers on
NFL rosters. Colorado is second with
18, and Oklahoma is third with 17
former players in the National Foot
ball League.
• The Colorado pass-catching duo
of Charles Johnson and Michael
Westbrook became Colorado’s No. 1
and No. 2 all-time leading receivers in
Saturday’sgame with Baylor. Johnson
has 1,575 yards, and Westbrook has
1,480 yards.
• Westbrook also played four snaps
at defensive back against Baylor. CU
coach Bill McCartney said Westbrook
graded 100 percent at defensive back
in post-game evaluations.

said that Rutz is probably two weeks
away from being ready to play.
The injuries have left Nebraska
with Matt Turman, a walk-on redshirt
freshman from Wahoo, as the only
healthy quarterback on the roster.
If selected, the applicant would be
expected to report to practice imme
diately and could be required to travel
to Los Angeles for the Huskers’ game
with UCLA Saturday.
The chances of seeing playing time
against UCLA would be slim, but not
impossible considering the current
health conditions of the quarterbacks.
Only one or two heal tny appl ican ts
would probably be chosen, but all
resumes could be given full consider
ation by the Nebraska coaching staff
and trainers.
A scholarship would not be given
because of NCAA limitations on the
number of scholarships, but benefits
could include:
• Full outfitting in Nebraska uni
forms.
• Free round-trip tickets to Husker
away games if applicant makes travel
squad.
• Free gameday meal.
• The opportunity to get hit by
Trev Alberts, Donta Jones, Mike
Anderson, Kevin Ramaekers and the
rest of the Blackshirts in practice.
• Complete medical coverage is
provided for any—dare we say it—
injuries that occur during practices or
games.
• Chance to meet future, current,
and former Husker greats.
•Opportunity to work closely with
quarterback coach Turner Gill and
Osborne.
Husker coaches would probably
prefer applicants who apply in per
son.
A high-school highl ight film might
also be encouraged, but any old, fad
ed, yellow newspaper cl ippings would
be acceptable if a video tape is un
available.
And, please, if the coaches actual
ly let you try out, look both ways
before crossing 1 Oth Street in front of
Memorial Stadium.

“All the postseason honors are sec
ondary to me, and I think whatever is
meant to be will happen,” Jones said.
“If it is my year to win the Heisman,
then that’s great. But if it is not, I
won’t be disappointed.”
Freshman Damon Benning has
been trying to fill Jones’ shoes.

Benning rushed for 131 yards on 19
attempts Saturday.
“A lot of guys in Damon’s position
wouldn’t have prepared himself to be
starter,” Jones said. “Most guys would
have been content as back-up and
practiced like it. Damon was ready to
go in there as a starter.”
Until he is 100 percent, Jones said
he was content to help his team in any
way possible.

* Dixon, who had 13 catches last
season, has already tallied nine recep
tions for 172 yanjs this year.
“I’ve made a big step,” he said. “I
wasn’t too relaxed last year. This
year, I’m a senior and I’m trying to
show leadership to the younger guys.”
The leadership starts at the prac
tice level, Dixon said.
“I want to show them that you have
to practice hard and play hard to be
successful,” he said.
The receivers have to remain fo
cused also, Dixon said. He said the
receivers were too tense last year.
“We weren’t really focused last year,”
he said. “We dropped a lot of passes
and we have worked to improve on
our concentration.
Dixon said the offense needed a
wake-up call to fight off its sluggish
start Saturday.
“We had to get ourselves together
because we were making a lot of
offensive mistakes,” he said. “Some
times all the fumbles and penalties
make you start thinking that you have
to get it together real quick."
Dixon, who will match performanc
es th is week with another sol id receiv
er in UCLA’s J.J. Stokes, edged Tex
as Tech All-American candidate Lloyd
Hill in the receivers’ match-up.
Hill also caught six passes, out for
13 less yards.
