New policy restricts smoking in stadium

Nebraska Comhusker fans should
embrace the new football season with
enthusiasm, but they should keep in
mind stadium policies, a UNL official
said.

ka-LincoIn athletic director, said a
restricted-smoking policy had been
added to stadium rules.
Smoking will be permitted only in
designated areas — under the stands
in the northwest, northeast, southeast
and southwest comers of the stadium.
Re-entry passes will be available
for those who choose to step outside
the stadium to smoke.
“It’s not right to have secondary
smoke blown in people’s faces —
that’s why we have banned smoking,"
Byrne said.
Memorial Stadium safety policies
prohibit:
• Throwing of any objects, includ
ing oranges. Any fan caught throwing
objects could be removed immediate
ly from the stadium. Game officials
may penalize the home team if ob
jects are thrown onto the playing field.
• Alcoholic beverages in the stadi
um or university-owned parking lots.
UNL reserves the right to examine the
contents of containers brought into
the stadium. Thermos bottles and
squeeze bottles are permitted, but may
be inspected.
• Umbrellas. Umbrellas may be a
safety hazard and block other fans’
view of the game.
Other safety policies address fans
with disabilities. Fans using wheel
chairs and their companions can enter
and sit near the north end of the east
stadium.
Parking for the disabled is avail
able for $5 at the northwest comer of
10th Street and Avery Avenue, near
stadium gate No. 11, and in campus
lot 18A at the comer of 15th and U
streets, north of the Nebraska Union.
Golf carts will be available to trans
port fans with disabilities from lot
18A to the stadium.
Byrne said all fans should follow
stadium policies for the safety and
comfort of everyone.
“We urge their cooperation in ob
serving all the rules and laws applica
ble to Memorial Stadium during our
games,” he said. '
“We particularly want to stress the
danger of throwing things within the
stadium or onto the playing field,” he
said. “We urge all fans to refrain from
that type of behavior.”

thrown, Byrne said.

an object and partially paralyzed.
“We can’t risk that,” Byrne said.
“If the right object is thrown, it could
kill somebody.”
But if fans follow the rules and
encourage others to follow the rules,
Byrne said no problems should result.
“Our number one goal for our fans
is that they have an enjoyable time
while they are cheering on our
Comhusker football team,” Byrne
said.
“We want them to cheer long and
ww
loud for the Huskers, but at the same
time we want them to act responsibly
and treat our visiting fans with cour
tesy,” he said.
Safety is an issue on many minds
as they enter Memorial Stadium.
But Byrne said the stadium was
ready for the fans. The stadium was
reinforced after section 14 collapsed
this summer.
“People can shout and jump up and
down and yell and scream their lungs
out,” Byrne said. “We encourage that.”
