It will be out next spring on Warner Brothers,” he said. Although he has formed a new group, Young said he remained ac tively involved with Poco, just like Pat Simmons continues to play with the Doobie Brothers. “The new band,” he said, “is just a project that the four of us have de cided to have some fun with. Pat’s the guy who sang ’Old Black Water.’ He plays guitar and sings. They always said he was the country side of tne Doobies. I sing, I play the guitar and I get to play banjo and dobro and steel guitar with it too. John Cowan plays bass and Bill Lloyd is another guitar player.... We don’t even have a name for the band,” he said. The nameless band will get a chance to test its musical wings, Young said. “This is so incestuous. We’re a new band opening for the Doobies for about three weeks, but we’re getting a chance to get out and play together and try some of the material in front of a real audience. John fCowan) is actually playing bass with the Doobies — he’s doing double duty. So you’ll see John the next day at the set when die Doobies come through. You’ll see half the new band.” At Poco’s show fans can expect to hear a good mix of classic hits like “Crazy Love” and “Call It Love,” Young said. Also, the band usually performs at least one song penned for the new ^“?he new band is kind of into country music—coming out of Nash ville — so a lot of the stuff I write is UNITE is sponsoring a petition drive for the retrial of Native American political prisoner Jimmy Weddell. I’m kind of working on both right now.” Two years ago, the five original members of Poco tried a reunion tour, Young said. “Tnere were a lot of the old per sonality things popping up again and guys who had a hard time getting along 20 years ago still had a hard time getting along,” he said. Poco’s current lineup includes bass player Richard Neville, drummer Tim Smith, and the two veterans. Young and Cotton. Playing with Cotton, who was not a part of the reunion tour, has been fun, Young said. “Musically it works neat 1 think this little four-piece band is maybe the best we’ve had." As far as the future ofPoco is con cerned, the band will continue mak ing an occasional record and stick to a summer touring schedule, Young said. “I don’t think Poco’s going to stop until they kick dirt on us." ■ i Lineup Continued from Page 12 “Cheers” spinoff. Groovy Bruce Campbell of the Evil Dead series stars as the tide character, a bounty hunter in 1893. The Old West was rarely this good — a lot of adventure with some great special effects. SATURDAY Nothing looks interesting for new shows on Saturday night, but that’s OK, because both Star TYek shows are returning. SUNDAY “Lob & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” 7 p.m., ABC. With a solid cast including Dean Cain as the Man UMMfllilllpSl S^HebeX Jnthe new lineup. Everything about it looks good — let’s hope the writing is. “SeaQuest DSV,** 7 p.m., NBC. A new action/adventure produced by Steven Spielberg, this looks great. Roy Scheider stars as Nathan Bridger, a naval commander in 2018 trying to keep the peace underwater. j Some of the least promising new shows this fall: TUESDAY “Phenom," 7:30 p.m., ABC. Judith Light (“Who’s the Boss?”), bad hair and all, in a questionable comedy about an overprotective mom, a teen-age tennis player and her overbearing coach. Sounds like a yawn. “Saved by the Bell: The College Years,1* 7 p.m., NBC. How Is this possible? Who’s in charge at NBC? Some of the best of the rest — the returning shows: MONDAY “Morphy Brown,** 8 p.m., CBS. Scott Bakula (“Quantum Leap**) joins Murphy & Co. as a new reporter.
