Committee starts search for dean Michelle McGowan Staff Reporter The search for a new dean of the UNL College of Arts and Sciences is underway. Senior Vice Chancellor for Aca demic Affairs Joan Leitzel, who is organizing the search committee, said the 12-member committee met for the first time Tuesday to organize the search. Leitzel said the committee formally would begin the search Oct. Former Dean John Peters left UNL for a position as the vice chancellor of academic affairs at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Peters, a 20 year University of Nebraska-Lincoln employee, was dean of the college for five years. Steve Hilliard, former chairman of the English department, will serve as the interim dean. Hilliard, who has been at the university 28 years, will fill the position until next August. “The transition between the two was very smooth,” Leitzel said. “They had a month overlap, which helped as well.” Leitzel said the search committee members’ names would be announced in about two weeks. “They are a group with diverse interests,” Leitzel said. Leitzel said the committee would plan a national search, which proba bly would attract many applicants. The applications will be reviewed throughout the fall semester, she said. No applications have been submitted to the university yet for the dean position. “We are looking for a senior per son who qualifies for tenure in the College of Arts and Sciences, and has administrative experience as well,” Leitzel said. The committee will interview qual ified applicants this winter. Leitzel said she expected to announce the name of the new dean during the spring semester. ASUN plans senate retreat From staff reports The year has been a quiet one so far for student senators, Keith Benes, ASUN president, said. Benes said the Association of Stu dents of the Uni versity ofNebras ka senators, like other students, needed time to get settled in for the school year. To get reac quainted and pre pare for their new year, Senators are planning a retreat on Sept. 26. “Senators will take a new look at the upcoming year,” he said. Benes said that senators at the re treat would set goals, brainstorm and decide what projects to address this year. Normally the retreat is a weekend event held in April, Benes said. Be cause senators took office in April, he said, the retreat usually was held in conjunction with ASUN orientation. Benes said senators were trained last April, but they were not able to have their retreat. By delaying the retreat, Benes said Ik hoped senators would be able to use last semester's experience in the senate to take a new look at their goals. Rodgers Continued from Page 1 seasons in the Canadian Football League before finishing his career with the Chargers in 1977 and ’78. He said he hoped his return to school would set an example for other professional and college athletes who didn’t finish school. “People have looked at most of the things I’ve done, both positive and negative,” he said. “Hopefully this will influence others to get a quality degree. Thatdictates what they can do after football.” Rodgers’ children influenced his decision, he said. His son, Terry Rodgers, who lettered as an NU I back in 1986, ’88, and ’89, graduated in 1991. His daughter, LaTonya, will graduate from UNL in May with a math degree. “They have been successful influ ences on me,” Rodgers said. “My successes influence them, and their successes influence me." Rodgers said he was serious about getting nis degree. “I mean to get this done. It’s not a matter of whetner I get it done or not, it’s a matter of how well I do it,” he said. “It’s not setting a good example if I get C’s and D’s for grades.” Welcome to Fall Sale!
