Spirit organization on the rally this fall By Lisa Sickert Senior Editor _ . Members of the newly formed UNL Spirit Club — formerly Com Cobs and Tassels—began the school year off a little peppy. The group conducted a pep rally Thursday evening at Broyhill Foun tain to teach students the Nebraska Yell Squad chants and the words to the UNL fight song. Although cheerleaders outnum bered students who attended, Terri Nielsen, president of Com Cobs and Tassels, said she was not disappoint ed that the crowd was small. Thursday night was just a “warm-up” for the weekly pep rallies the group plans, she said. Although not all upper-class resi dents have chosen to live away from freshman floors, many have, Schumann said. “They were saying, ‘Hey, I really don’t want to be a part of the freshman community. ’ We responded to an iden tified need,” he said. The 24-hour visitation was anoth er request of returning students. Wells said the new policy had changed the atmosphere. When residence hall officials “are willing to trust you, it makes you feel like you’re living in an apartment,” Wells said. And the increased privacy of the single-room option for upper-class students is another benefit for them. Don Mirabella, a senior in me chanical engineering, has lived in res idence halls for six years — many of those with the same floormates. He and his friends moved from Cather Hall to Pound Hall this year. “Every year I’ve had a fantastic floor. Later in the season, athletes and coaches will at tend, she said. UNL Spirit Club is a result of Com Cobs and Tassels merging into one organization last year, said Sue Schlautman, a senior and vice-presi dent of the club. Com Cobs was organized at the University of Nebraska in 1921 as a men’s club to promote school spirit for all athletics and to foster friend ship between competing universities, Schlautman said. Tassels was formed in 1924 as the a family,” he said. Mirabella plans to live on campus until he graduates. He likes the servic es, such as cleaning, cooking and maintenance, that the residence halls provide. Donovan Score, a 27-year-old transfer student from California, has his own room in Cather. The news editorial junior likes living with up per-class students because he feels more comfortable around older stu dents. “Because (the hall is) upperclass men, people go their own way more than in other dorms, and they concen trate more on school,” he said. Score is especially proud of his dwelling. “I have the best dorm room on campus. It’s my penthouse on 17th Street.” Although most residents aren’t as crazy about their residence halls as Score, most agree the best part about living on campus is the convenience. Wells said the cost of living in residence halls versus the cost of liv ing off campus was practically even when food and transportation costs were considered. The cost for a single room with a 13-meal plan is $3,490 a year, or about $500 a month. Anyone interested in becoming in volved is encouraged to attend, she said. Clint Taubenheim, a sophomore in the Division of General Studies, said, “The only reason I went to pep rallies in high school was because I was in them.” Taubenheim said he would attend more pep rallies atBroyhill and bring his friends when the weather cools.
