“The Man Without
a Face”
Mel Gibson is the latest actor to
take a turn behind the camera—and
he doesn’t do half-bad.
Set in 1968, “The Man Without a
Face” is a sentimental story that cou
ples the coming-of-age feeling of
“Stand By Me” with the tutorial lead
ership of “Dead Poet’s Society.”
The movie doesn’t do either job as
well as those films, but it’s a valiant
first effort.
Twelve-year-old Chuck Norstadt
(newcomer Nick Stahl) is over
whelmed by life with his oft-married
mother and his two half-sisters. It’s
immediately apparent that he ’ s in need
of a strong father figure, but scarred
Justin McLeod (Gibson) is supposed
ly an odd choice to fill that role.
McLeod is the town freak in the
coastal Maine village, and a popular
target of rumors and ghost stories.
Nicknamed “Hamburger Head” by
the summer kids, he lives the life of a
recluse, where he suffers with his
deformity alone.
McLeod’s face and body are cov
ered with the horrible bum scars he
suffered in an automobile accident.
Chuck searches him out when he
discovers McLeod was once a teach
er. Chuck needs a summer tutor in
order to pass tests to gain admission to
amilitary boarding school—his dead
father’s alma mater.
McLeod is predictably gruff at first,
but before long we find he has a
demon’s face but an artist’s soul. He
and the boy develop a close bond from
which each character profits. Both
learn about friendship; McLeod makes
ffers mild success I

peace with himself, and Chuck learns
about growing up.
Unfortunately, their friendship
makes the gossipy townsfolk begin
speculating about the decency of their
relationship.
There aren’t a great deal of surpris
es in the movie. Gibson relics on
audience sentimentality, a little
Shakespeare and the wonderfully ear
nest performance of Stahl to hook the
audience.
The approach certainly worked
with the screening audience — clap
ping and commentary accompanied
the climactic scenes.
It was apparent, however, on more
than one occasion, that a new guy was
in the director’s chair — especially
when the same shots appeared time
and time again. Despite those minor
problems, Gibson’s first-effort is a
pretty good one, and it is worth watch
ing.
