For the first time ever, track and field coaches will be attending Cam pus Recreation’s punt, pass and kick competition on Wednesday in an ef fort to find another javelin thrower. Danis Willet, an assistant track coach, said that graduation losses have thinned the javelin squad. “What we want to do is review some of the passers in this competi tion to find some potential javelin throwers,” Willet said. Because so few states have javelin as a high school sport, recruiting throwers is difficult, she said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to strengthen that group with somebody from this event,” Willet said. Two of the more popular intramu ral sports — slow-pitch softball and flag football — won’t have scholar ships available, but will start in the fall. JeffKeamey, Campus Recreation’s graduate assistant in charge of Intra mural Sports, said both sports annual ly draw about 2,500 students apiece. “Slow-pitch softball is probably Upcoming intramural sports Activity Campus Recreation Center infomatiofimeeting , . Sept. 2 is the deadline for teams to sign up for slow pitch softball and coed flag football. Men’s flag foot ball teams and women’s flag football teams need to sign up by Sept. 27. A mud volleyball tournament and innertube water basketball are among the more unigue events to be offered. The innertube water basketball tournament will be a part of Campus Recreation’s All-Nighter on Sept. 17. DN graphic The All-Nighter, which lasts from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m., will also offer a Frisbee skills competition and a slam dunk competition. Kearney said the best way for stu dents to find out about what’s going on at the Office of Campus Recre ation is to attend the Garnous Recre ation information meeting Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Nebraska Union. He said all the intramural coordi nators from each event will be there to answer questions and give out infor mation. i *■ Manners argument leads to meiee MILWAUKEE (AP) — No brushbacks or beanballs precipitated a bench-clearing melee between the Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics, just adisagreement between managers over on-field decorum. This brawl, in the second game of a marathon doubleheader between two last-place teams, delayed play 25 minutes ami got ugly in a hurry early Wednesday morning. There was a flying tackle from Oakland’s Troy Neel, who had a foot ball scholarship to Texas A&M, that nailed Milwaukee’s Dickie Thon. And moments later there was a devastating punch delivered by Ath letics reliever Edwin Nunez, a former Brewer, that knocked down Milwau kee’s B.J. Surhoff, bloodied his mouth and sent him to the hospital for stitch es. Television replays show that SurhofT was being restrained at the time by Milwaukee manager Phil Gamer, Oakland manager Tony La -44— On the field that’s probably the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen. — Cal Eldred, Milwaukee pitcher -tf - Russa and Oakland's Mike Aldrete. “B.J. was totally defenseless and Edwin comes up and just pops him in the face. That's just brutal,” said Mil waukee pitcher Cal Eldred. “On the field that’s probably the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen. I went over to (Nunez) and said he should apologize to B J., but he said no. He backed off right after he hit him and that action right there should tell you that he knew he did something wrong. Nunez had given up five runs in 1 1-3 innings in the first game of the doubleheader. “1 saw Surhoff push one of my teammates,” said Nunez. “(Surhoff) was right next to me.” The melee began shortly after re liever Dennis Eckersley was ejected by home plate umpire Dale Scott for arguing balls and strikes. Eckersley thought he didn’t get a couple of close pitches in the ninth inn mg of the second game with Oakland leading 6 4. It also came after Pat Listach sin gled in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. La Russa then came on the field and became embroiled in a heated discussion with Scott, and also was ejected. When LaRussa continued to argue, Milwaukee manager Phil Gar ner came out of the dugout and com plained about the delay.
