The original 1971 audio tape recorded a loitering tramp singing a religious hymn, “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet.” Intrigued by the simplicity of the tramp’s voice and song, Gavin Bryars, who inherited the tape from a friend, toyed with the idea of adding in struments. One afternoon while playing the tape in his studio, he left to get a cup of coffee. When Bryars returned, he found the lively atmosphere of the room transformed. “People were moving about much more slowly than usual, and a few were sitting alone, quietly weeping. I was puzzled until I real ized that the tape was still playing and that they had been overcome by the old man’s unaccompanied the emotional power of the music. True. The strange and sedating music could be marketed as a pow erful relaxation tape. The repetition of the four lines seeps with a low tide of emotion that creeps from your toes to your brain until your body is totally im mersed in the rich quivering strains of the tramp’s voice. The opening track, “Tramp with Orchestra 1 (string quartet) ’ will tempt you to fiddle with the vol ume dials on your stereo as the old man’s voice fades in. Each track melts into the next and is only a hair different from the first. Track two is “Tramp with Orchestra II (low strings),” “T ramp with Orchestra III (no strings),” “Tramp and Tom Waits with Full Orchestra....” Get the picture? Fans of Tom Waits who buy the tape strictly for the Waits appeal may be disappointed—he accom panies the Tramp for only a few minutes. Quite honestly, the full-bodied gruffness of Waits’ harmony dis tracts from the the compfelling in nocence of the old man’s vocals, an innocence almost lost in the tech nology of dubbing. —Jill O Brion Cypress Hill Insane in the Brain Ruffhouse/Cohimbia “I wrote shit for the blunted ones to approach it,” raps B-Real on **I Wanna Get High,” the first track on the new Cypress Hill joint, “Black Sunday.” The song sets the mood for the album, making the listener feel as if he were in the middle of a Cypress circle, passing the blunts ,, B. Sen Pog and DJ Muggs themselves. Many remember the splash Cy Courtesy of Ruffhouse/Columbia press made in the hip hop pool in 1991 when they dropped their self titled debut album. After four sin gles, it went platinum and expressed to millions of people the group’s stance on marijuana use. “Legalize It,” another new pro hemp track, sums up the Cypress vibe, while bringing the issues to another group of listeners. After the first album, Cypress became the first hip hop spokes men for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. The band members’ openness about their marijuana use has brought about increased references by fel low rappers such as Redman and Dr. Die, who aren’t afraid to rap about their favorite recreational drug. Cypress even sampled bits from a hemp rally for the beginning of “Hits from the Bong."tvk ^r<: See CYPRESS on 17 Plain Truth: Quality, Reliable Computer Products Don't have to be Expensive.
