But although the polls agreed on Nebraska’s ranking, Coach Tom Osborne said they weren’t depend able. “There’s hardly anything more meaningless than a preseason poll,” Osborne said. “It’s nice to be in the top 10 because it is tough to move all the way up from 20th or 25th unless you have a phenomenal season.” And, Osborne said, the No. 8 rank ing is probably better than being ranked first. “We’ve tried that a few times,” Osborne said. “That’s always a diffi cult position. No. 1 brings a lot of distractions.” Voters in both polls picked Florida State as the top team in the nation, followed by Alabama and Michigan. Coaches in the CNN/USA Today poll picked Miami fourth and Texas A&M fifth. The AP reversed those teams’ rankings. Colorado was picked 10th by the coaches and 11th by AP writers. Okla homa was 21 st in the coaches poll and 22nd in the AP poll. Kansas, which opens Saturday night against Florida State in the Pig skin Classic, was picked 26th in the AP poll and 31 st in the coaches poll. 1. Florida Stata (42) 2. Alabama (14) 3. In addition, extra columns will be added in the south end of the stadium. The department also will waterproof the west stadium. “We are putting inwrpqA wees or protection,” he said. Byrne said the athletic department hoped to make the stadium safer than before so that a section collapse could never occur again. „ With all the extra precautions, some students were not worried about being transferred to a section near where the collapse occurred for the upcoming football season. “I wouldn’t really think twice about it,” said Scott Straka, a sophomore who sat in the section for a few games last season. “I believe they ’ re going to do what they have to do to make it safe.” Part of what the athletic depart ment must do to accomplish this feat is to pay for the inspections and recon struction. The cost to make the stadi um safe was estimated at $365,000. Byrne said the athletic department was justified in spending that amount. “Even if it cost a little more, we just wanted to be double safe,” Byrne said. But sophomore Beth Johnson ques tioned why that money wasn’t spent to prevent a collapse in the first place. “For the amount of money tire athletic department pulls in each year, you’d think they would get an inex pensive inspection more often to in sure the safety of spectators,” she And spectators like Straka will wonder long after the reconstruction is finished and the equipment is gone whether the collapse was an isolated incident. “I think chances are low that it would happen again,” Straka said. “But, (the incident) will make you wonder if it could happen again. ’ But safety questions weren’t enough to keep Comhusker football fans from buying tickets. “A lot of people are demanding tickets,” Byrne said. “Tire ticket of fice said there is some of the highest demand for tickets in years."
