Dirty rushing not a problem at UNL By Kristin Armstrong Satff Reporter Sorority rush is not all fun and games — it can lead to some seri ous rule breaking. But not at UNL. During the rush process, sorori ties must follow certain rules, said Panhellenic President Lisa Sickert. If a rule is broken, it is considered a “rush infraction,** or “dirty rush Every year rumors of dirty rush ing spread, but formal complaints are rarely filed. Because UNL has had so few reports of rush viola tions, a list of infractions is difficult to compile, she said. “I think that anything a sorority does that makes a rushee uncom fortable can be a form of dirty rushing,** Sickert said, offering gen eral characterization of illegal rush activities. She also said the following could be considered rush infractions: • excessive decoration of the sorority house during rush week. • contacting a rushee during the summer. This gives one sorority unfair advantage over the others. • “hot-boxing ” when a rushee is cornered by three active mem bers of the sorority during a rush party • entertaining a rushee when a sorority under prohibited auspices. For example, inviting a rushee over by herself, without the rest of the rushees. • directly promising a rushee something. UNL’s greek system doesn’t need to use these tactics to attract members, Sickert said, however, two overall rush chairwomen go to each sorority during rush and watch for possible infractions. If an infraction is found, it is reported to die Greek Affairs of fice. Rushees, the targets of dirty rush ing, are unaware of what consti tutes a rush infraction. They are told to talk to a Panhellenic dele gate if they have a question about rush policies, Sickert said. The delegate knows if a rush infraction has occurred and tells the rushee what options are avail able, she said. In order to file a formal rush complaint, the rushee must fill out and sign a form citing the infrac tion. This process is intimidating for many rushees, Sickert said, es pecially when the infraction is something trivial. IAN MOORE Aug. 30th at the ZOO BAR It’s been a hot summer at the ZOO BAR.
