The Associated Press reported that the last tape of the American anthem had already been shipped out, so a soldier had to sing “The”Star-Spangled Banner” live as the operation changed hands. Later in the week, the United Nations is expected to assume overall operational control of rebuilding war-tom Somalia. U.S. forces have been in the country since Dec. 9, when they landed to help in the distribution of aid to the starving Somalians caught in the country’s civil war. Their efforts have helped restore order and peace to a country that was anarchy before they arrived. Now most of the U.S. force is departing and handing over operations to the United Nations. About 4,000 Americans will remain and continue to aid Somalia, but they will do so as part of a world effort. The precedent that is being set in Somalia should be followed in the former Yugoslavia, another country tom by civil war. The United States should avoid taking unilateral action and bogging itself down in Bosnia. The biggest mistake we could make would be to singly venture into a conflict we cannot control. Despite the urgency of the conflict in Bosnia and the need for j action there, a solution to the war can only be found if the nations of the world arc willing to work together. - I On Monday, the Minnesota Senate dealt yet another blow to education. The senate’s approval of a higher education funding package, which would freeze both tuition and salary increases at the university over the next two years, is another in an appalling and hostile series of attacks on the univer sity by the Legislature. If the Legislature is serious about main taining Minnesota’s reputation for excellent education, it must back up its verbal commitment with realistic support. This package shows that legislators arc finally listening to student concern about rising tuition. But it promises to have dangerous long-term effects. The package targets the two most vulnerable groups at the - university: students ami employees. Under this package, students will escape tuition hikes only if university employees’ pay is frozen. If employees arc to receive even standard salary increases, students will pay for it through higher tuition. The funding plan threatens to play a divisive role at the univer sity. Using “divide and conquer” tactics, the Legislature hopes to avoid blame for the university’s financial difficulty. The Legisla ture is attempting to shirk its responsibility for the quality of Minnesota’s higher education system by passing blame onto either students or staff for the misfortune of the losers. A salary freeze will create resentment among faculty and will lower the university’s alrcady-poor faculty retention rate. Losing the best faculty will result in fewer students, and fewer students means higher tuition. Losing both students and faculty will lower • the quality of the university, and ultimately Minnesota taxpayers will pay the price. I really thought I could make it through a school year without having to re spond to scholarly writing in the DN. But, Erin Egan (DN, April 26,1993), you leave me no choice. You see, when you say you’re frightened, it means that Rush Limbaugh and the rest of the great conservatives around the country are succeeding. We have only about 1,360 days until we bool Mrs. and Mr. Clinton from the While House any way. Your approach to equality is a fine thought. But liberals do promote lazi ness and the “we’ll take care of you’’ altitude. Conservatives, on the other hand, sponsor a much more optimistic and progressive ideology. We believe in the “hand up’’ rather than the “hand out.’’ Lowering the lax on capital gains and allowing tax credits to expanding or start-up businesses arc called in centives. They help spur the economy of this nation and docrcatc jobs. They arc not, as you liberals like to say, “how the rich gel richer.” We have other ways of doing that. Even though it’s day 98 of America held hostage. I’m certain we can sur vive the lax-and-spend administra tion for erne term. I’m also certain that this conservative movement is headed in the right direction. I salute the students on this campus, and all other campuses, who are proud to cal I them selves conservative. l am lhanklul lor Kush Limbaugh, who points out to more than IS mil lion listeners a day the way things ought to be in this great land of ours. If you would take the time to actually listen, he docs this in a way that is neither racist nor sexist. In your closing paragraph, you sound as though you arc a closet con servative wanting to come out Con servative thought is founded on the very principles that were prevalent when this nation was bom. Times when people worked hard for a living, believed in and worshipped God, re spected their parents and teachers — you know, those things called “family values.” They didn’t sit around wait ing for their welfare checks to come. If you would like to join us, we would be £lad to welcome you. But if you’re still luoking for a way out, don't waste your time with the “left” coast; it’s only a matter of lime for them, too. Just give me a call and let me know how much you need for air fare to the liberal country of your choice. I’ll even give you a free ride to the airport. Shawn W. Traudt senior political science What’s up with Wendy Mott? Red Tolnai Lincoln Brian Shetlito/DN Seating In response to Bill Byrne’s new scaling arrangement for the students in Memorial Stadium, I’ve come up with a few ingenious ideas that I’m surprised Willie didn’t come up with himself. One — the only scaling for stu dents will be at Buck Bcltzcr Field, in which transistor radios will be passed out with season tickets. Two — double the season ticket prices for students. The hike will take care of the security guards that will be seated in every other student section scat. At the beginning of each game a body cavity search for oranges, ban ners, alcohol and blow-up dolls will be conducted. At the conclusion of each game, each student will leave in single Hie. i nrcc — when sludenis stand to cheer for their beloved Huskers, an announcement made by Willie, will be announced over the public address system that every student will sitdown. The consequences will be that he reports them to the NCAA for cheat ing on exams. Four — The only student sealing will be done by lottery. The two lucky winners will get to sit by Willie (straight forward, hands on lap). Do these ideas sound stupid? Well, Willie’s aren’t much better. If Willie makes any more room for boosters and alums. Memorial Stadium will be the next sight of Cocoon III. Matt Travis junior criminal justice I Jeremy Fitzpatrick, thou do pro test too much. Your petty little tirade against Students for America and The Ideal would have been more amusing if it weren’t so pathetic. A group of students — most with no newspaper experience — take *on the daunting task of publishing a newspaper, and you have the gall to insinuate the staff arc morons because of a few typos in the maiden issue? What scares you so much that you have to resort to such a childish, bland chant of “You can’t spell-ell, You can’t spell-ell’’? Yourcutc little column proves that you epitomize what it means to be a politically correct liberal. Generali zations, stereotypes and character at tacks are the liberals* best weapons. It helps them avoid constructive debate on the substance of an issue. We say we re against Hillary s health-care plan because all indica tions are that it will reek of socialism. You say we’re sexist, afraid of women and little white boys. We say that we’re against Affir mative Action because it violates the principle of individual abilities equat ing success. You say we’re bigots, racists and Nazis. We say that cancer research de serves more funding than AIDS re search because it simply affects and kills more Americans each year than AIDS. You say that we’re homophobic. Gee, Jeremy, your job seems pretty easy from my perspective. We dis tribute an alternative newspaper — a damn funny one — and you call it a joke. Case closed. A very impressive rebuttal indeed. And one more thing, Jeremy. Al though the Soviet Union is gone and communism is fading fast, SFA is here; conservatism never left. Dave Mason senior actuarial science Wimmin If the editors of The Ideal are inter ested in discussing wimmin s issues, then as wimmin, we feel it is our responsibility to inform them of wimmins’ grammar. Whereas “womyn” is the Singular form of the English word commonly spelled “woman,** the plural form is not “womyn” but “wimmin” (as in “this university is swimmin’ with wimmin”). If you can leam these spell ings, it will be easier for you in the future. Stacie L. Schultz junior broadcasting
