Well, it finally happened. I and the
girl of my dreams made eye contact.
You know, eye contact?
“You, in brown loafers. Me, in the
red blazer and orange briefs. We made
eye contact across a crowded smoky
room. I went home and thought about
you while holding up Claudia
Schieffer’s poster with one hand. In
terested? Respond via personals.
Mouth Breather”
Yeah, me. I always thought I’d be
immune—that my lifetime member
ship in the He-Man Woman Hater’s
Club would stand me in good stead at
the critical moment.
At least I thought I’d have the
cojoncs to go up and talk to her,
instead of sending her some lame-ass
personal and hiding in my room.
And I tried to talk to her — well, I
would have — I was just about to,
really. But some other guy came up
and talked to her all night instead.
He kept elbowing me in the ribs.
(Yeah, I was right there, I have no
excuse. I should have already been
slapped in the face — or well on the
way to some understanding with her
— by the time Bud arrived. At least I
think his name was Bud. Ma^be it was
Larry or Melman.)
TTicn, I don’ t know, I spent the rest
of the evening asking everyone in the
bar if they knew who she was. No one
did.
I wanted to gel raging drunk, stag
ger over, cut in and say “Howdy, little
filly! The name’s Mark. What’s your
handle, sweetheart?” (I kind of revert
to Texan when I’m drunk.) But I had
only 27 cents, which wasn’t even
enough to get buzzed.
But maybe I alienated her just as
well (and for free) by crouching in the
comer, staring at her.
So now what?
Well, I have a couple free person
als coming to me (the perks on this job
are endless), but do I really want to
indulge in a weakness I’ve made a
career mocking?
I’m too stubborn for that, no. ■
I could hang around O’Rourkes
and hope she comes back. I could talk
everyone into buying me drinks and
stare, bleary eyed, at the television
until closing every night. (Hah, like I
don’t already!)
Or maybe I should just take this
opportunity to introduce myself and
hope she recognizes herself in this
angst-riddled missive:
Hi, my name is Mark. What’s
yours?
