Kiley Timperley/DN Nebraska’s Zarina Galvan returns a shot in a match earlier this year. The Cornhusker women’s tennis team, seeded No. 7 in the Big Eight Tournament, will face Oklahoma State in the first round Friday. Husker tennis team faces Cowgirls first Individual effort key, coach says By Matt Woody Staff Reporter The Nebraska women’s tennis team is looking to rebound from last weekend’s loss to Oklahoma and prove itself at the Big Eight Tournament, coach Scott Jacoboson said. The Comhuskers will occupy the No. 7 seed in the tournament, which begins Friday in Prairie Village, Kan. Nebraska’s first round opponent will be Oklahoma State, the No. 2 seed. And from previous meetings between the two teams, it appears the Huskers have their work cut out for them. The Cowgirls completed the Big Eight conference season with a 6-1 dual record, good enough to finish second behind Kansas. En route to that finish, Oklahoma State shut out Nebraska 9-0 in a match April 17. Nebraska isn’t gunning for one team, Jacobson said. The Huskers’ main goal is to finish higher than their seed in the tournament, he said. To accomplish that, Jacobson said, the entire team is going to have to turn it up a notch. Team members “can’t be looking for someone else to win it for our team. Each individual has to take care of her own court,” Jacobson said. Nebraska’s best chance for a win may comeagainsleitherlowaStateor Kansas State, Jacobson said. In the regular season, die Comhuskers lost to both teams by a score of 5-4. The Big Eight Tournament is the place to pul it all together, Jacobson said. “Basically, (the season) is all prepa ration for one big tournament, and this is it,” he said.
