Film fails to reach boiling point; subplot action merely simmers ‘Boiling Point’ •r You have got to be kidding. What is Hollywood trying to do to the moviegoers of the world with “Boiling Point” (Edgewood 3, 56th and Highway 2; Plaza 4,201 N. 12th St.)? Are they trying to play the “how many meaningless subplots can we fit into a movie’rgame? Wesley Snipes (“White Men Can’t Jump,” “Passenger 57”) is Jimmy Mercer, a U.S. Treasury agent whose partner gets wasted during a deal gone bad. Mercer has seven days to nail his partner’s murderer before his reas signment to Newark, N.J., goes through. Hey, we can understand that. Who would want to go to Newark anyway? Dennis Hopper (“Blue Velvet”) plays yet another bozo-loser named Red. As a two-bit con man who just got out of the joint, Red is trying desperately to pay back a $50,000 debt to a local loan shark and he has been given just seven days to do it. Someone else with a seven-day deadline? Coincidence? Hmmmm.. The main storyline is Jimmy trying tocatch up to Red and his bloodthirsty (but extremely stupid) partner Ronny (Viggo Mortensen), but the movie, plodding over to the left, shows us Jimmy is divorced and his ex-wife has taken their kid. Then, plodding over to the right, the movie shows Red trying to scam anyone he meets, including an ex girlfriend named Mona (Valeric Perrinc, “Superman”). But wail! There’s more! Jimmy is seeing a prostitute (Lolita Davidovich) _ on the side and she also happens to be seeing Red at the same time. PLUS, we have a sleazebag lawyer who Red is trying to blackmail; PLUS a junkie girlfriend of another small-time hood who is an old friend of Red’s. OK, do you have all that? There will be a blue-book quiz on this later. The ironic thing is that with all these plots floating in and out during the course of the film, none of them have any substance and none of them work. If you want to see Snipes at his best in an action-drama flick,go rent “New Jack City” or “Passenger 57.” He must have lost a bet with somebody to end up in this piece of garbage. “Boiling Point” is full of hot air and nothing more. — Gerry Beltz juu. aviiw/3jr min auuui n i\/iiu3iiip that trips on its way to pluck heartstrings; a black-and-white thriller and its 1992 remake are released simultaneously; and a se quel thatshould not have been made (what a surmise). “Aspen Extreme” Two young men from Michigan head to the powdery slopes of Colorado in search of happiness and life affirmation. The premise is cheesy, the dia logue even cheesier, but the movie does have a few bright spots. The actors are somewhat charming, and the skiing footage is breathtaking. “Night and the City” Robert DeNiro is Harry Fabian, a New York lawyer who is more Ronald J. Palagi—ambulance chaser—than upstanding attorney Oliver Wendell Holmes. This film is a remake of the 1950s version of the same name, starring Richard Widmark and Googie Withers. In the original, the story is essentially the same except Harry (Widmark) lives in London, works for a club and sends male tourists out for a night of cheap entertainment. He sees the opportunity to make big money when a former fighter comes to town — said fighter’s father is the gangster heavy in this (me. As is usually the case, the origi nal is a better showing. It has subtlety throughout, while the newer version has none. The 1992’s “Night in the City” wastes Jessica Lange, and has DeNiro doing an other sleazy toughie with no soul. “Pet Sematary Two” Why Stephen King’s stories keep get ting made into films is a mystery. Why anyone would make a sequel to a mediocre movie that didn’t do King’s novel justice remains even more a mystery. Edward Furlong stars, Anthony Edwards co-stars.
