Well, guess what: these are some of the issues that the big cities of America faced when those mas sive waves of European immigrants came here. America, the land of the free, has to keep its promise to everyone — forever!! If you don’t like it then you should go back to where you came from. Just likeyou send other people back. Yes, I am suggesting that if your name is a good ol’ English name like Joe Smith and your fam ily has been here for more than 300 years, then you go back and sec how you like it, because your an cestors killed, and you deport, people who have a much longer history in America than you. Oth erwise if you choose to stay here you have to deal with it and not in a biased manner, and I say this for America only. In other countries which are made up of a more homogeneous people (perhaps Ja pan, India or Germany) things would be different, but this is America, and America is for every body now! All I hear about in the media dealing with immigration is Mexi cans, and now recently Asians are included, butbolh groups of people are hard-working. The Mexicans that come to the United States come to work the jobs that no one else wants to do, and for very little pay. They come to work—to su rvi ve, to feed their families. This isn’t a vaca tion for them, like when '‘Ameri cans” go to their country. Some of these people get robbed and even die in an effort to come and clean youryardoryourtoilct. Don’t these people deserve a little more com passion? What I also see in the media is how Mexicans and other Latino people are portrayed tobeall lower class and crime- loving members of society. In almost any movie or sitcom with either a while or black cast I can be almost 99 percent su re that if there’s a maid in the plot, she’s going to have a Spanish ac cent. So Mexicans commit crimes, and some arc illegal aliens, but there are also white, black, and yellow crimi nals. Hut as always, the negative side always overshadows the posi tive efforts of people, especially in dealing with non-Anglo people, becausethal’swhatgctsand makes the news. People see so much negativity in the media that they begin to believe that every non-Anglo person is like that. It’s so easy to go with the flow or have the mindset that you have when you’re born into a family with an advantage in life. There is good and bad in every thing, in everyone, and in every society, but we have to look at, examine and analyze the situation fully and in depth before we arrive at any conclusions. After all, this is how we are supposed to think while in college — we are sup posed to be well-educated and well informed citizens in this society. Sadly enough, though, I have heard some of the most racist, biased and ignorant opinions while in college and from college “educated” people. Why can’t I just be a normal student and go through life without having to aeal with being stereotyped, discriminated against, made fun of, or having to deal with the issue of race every single day? Because this is America and Anglo people like our food, music and skin color (but not for us) of course — if it’s loo dark it’s loo Mexican — but for themselves, so they can be tan).
