Commission Continued from Page 1. mission, said the disagreement be tween the commission and university officials should not be taken person ally. “People should not misinterpret differences of opinion to reflect rela tionships,” he said. “We are all pro fessionals. “We simply have to agree to dis agree,” he said. “Half of working with people is understanding.” \ The mission of the coordinating commission is more than just to coor dinate higher education, Stahl said. It is to regulate it as well. “Although we are coordinating, we are a regulating body,” he said. “That’s hard for most people to un derstand.” Massengale disagreed, saying that the group was set up strictly as a coordinator. “As long as they stay in coordinat ing position, (there’s) no problem,” he said. “My own personal feeling was they were getting into govern ing.” Because the commission is a new organization, Stahl said, the regents as well as other education governing boards felt threatened. “If I was in their case, I would feel imposed upon if that autonomy was totally taken away,” Stahl said. “If I was in their place, I wouldn’t like it.” UPC Continued from Page 1 Along with the wish-list letters, Doyle said UPC event directors would go to the different student organiza tions and tell the groups about the eventsandactivities UPC has planned. “This will bea major time commit ment from everyone,” Doyle said. “It will be impossible for the event directors to meet with all the groups. That’s why student volunteers are so important,” he said. “Student volun teers are the key to this policy being successful.” POLICE REPORT Beginning midnightThursday 12:27 a.m. — Non-student as saulted, Delta Tau Delta Frater nity, 715 N. 16th St. 9:25a.m.—Stereostolen.park ing lot at 17th and R streets, $100. 12:17 p.m. — Spcakcrs/tapes stolen, parking lot at Harpcr Schramm-Smith, $260. 2:45 p.m. — Backpack/pursc stolen. Scott Moore of Seward said. y& simply have to t agree to disagree. —Stahl i Executive director of the commission -tt - Moore, chairman of the Legislature’s Appropriations Com mittee, said legislators would look at both lists when determining univer sity appropriations. However, he said, “it would be simpler if we were singing out of the same hymn book.” The commission and regents used different methods when comprising their peer lists. The regents hired three former university presidents with no ties to UNL to determine their list. They selected universities with simi lar budgets, programs and salaries. Faculty salaries weren’t a consid eration on the commission’s list. “We’ve refused to let faculty sala ries get involved; it’s irrelevant to what we’re doing,” Stahl said. “We did not structure the concept of sala ries into what we did.” Budget review, tuition fees study and program review were the main objectives for the commission's list, narrowed down from ISO institutions selected by the National Center for Higher Education Management Sys tems of Boulder, Colo. Massengale said the regents selec tion group had a background in higher education, and the commission's pro cess primarily used numbers. He also was concerned with the exclusion of faculty salaries. “If you are making budget (com parisons), faculties are a major part,” Massengale said. “You can’t leave it out.” Commission officials said they weren’t concerned with the universi ties’ specific structures. “We examined the institution. We did not worry about labels,” Stahl said. “We virtually were blind to names. “We weren’t thinking what they were called. If they’re similar, they’re similar.” Stahl said some people’s fears that the commission’s list would hamper UNL’s future growth were unfounded. “(People are saying) this list is like building a fence around UNL, they aren’tgoing to grow,” he said. “That’s completely inaccurate.” Are You Late? • Free Pregnancy testing Women's : ZCSS&SSSm Medical Center to i4 weeks of Nebraska ‘ available appo, ntmems 4930 "L" Street • Student discounts 7 • Visa, Mastercard Toll kee (800) 877-6337 llii p |Sj I III ■^IPIPWWW UNL does not discriminate in its academic, admissions of employment programs and abides \f;r •, ’* ''> j'-iy *:;>/■ l»V ill I1 !leral regulation pertaining to same % m positions include: managing editor, associate news editor, sports editor, wire editor, senior reporters, copy desk chief, night news editor, photo chief, assistant photo chief, art director, cartoonist, supplements editor, Sower editor and columnist.
