Falkland
Continued from Page 7
"It made me realize I really en
joyed being on the team,” Falkland
said. “I’ve had some good times — I
didn’t want to end it that way.”
Falkland said the break got me
hungry again.”
He proved that on Saturday with a
straight-set singles win against Drake
that {Moved crucial in the Huskers 4
3 victory over the Bulldogs.
Speculation around the tennis team
was that there might have been added
tension between Falkland and
McDermott over Falkland’s desire to
play at No. 1 singles.
Senior Matthias Mueller is
Nebraska’s current No. 1 singles
player.
Falkland made school history when
he beat the No. 2 ranked singles player
in the country earlier in the season,
making his opponent from Northern
Arizona the highest-ranked player to
ever lose to a Husker.
Falkland said that was an example
of why he should have been given the
opportunity to compete at the top
singles spot.
“I was really disappointed about
that,”he said. "I wasn’tclaimingto be
the No. 1 player, but I thought I should
have had the chance to play No. 1.”
Mueller has struggled in some of
his singles matches, but McDermott
said he’s not ready to change the
lineup.
“It’s just like Coach Osborne —
you don’t take Tommie Frazier out
because he had a bad game against
Iowa State; you’ve got to look at
consistency,” McDermott said.
McDermott, who is in his 13th year
at the helm of Nebraska, said some of
the team’s controversies could be
beneficial.
“Hopefully, it will make us a better
team,” he said. “I think it can when
you can handle adversity.”
Falkland said no matter what, he
was going to try to do what he could
to help the Huskers in their strive for
the conference title.
“AH you can (to is give 100 per
cent. As long as I give 100 percent,
then I’m happy,” he said.
McDermott said he hoped he would
see Falkland play up to his capabili
ties now that the Big Eight season is to
begin. ,
“He’s a good tennis player when
he gives 100 percent,” McDermott
said. “He ends up winning matches
that are important, and maybe that
can rub off on the other players.’’ »

Inside linebacker Mike Anderson
said he thought the new formation
would be successful.
“It’smoreof an offensive defense,”
he said. “We’ll be a more aggressive
defense.’’
McBride said he thought the line
backer position would be the strength
of the defense next season.
“I think our linebacker position
will be strong,” he said. “We have
experienced players coming back.”
Anderson, a two-year starter, will
be one the leaders of the defensive
squad, McBride said.
“(Anderson) is a very critical
player,” he said. “He’s one of the best
linebackers we’ve had around hoe.”
The Huskers, who lost five defen
sive starters from last year’s squad,
also will spend spring practice rind
ing replacements.
“Every year we lose seniors and
we have to rind players to fill the
spots,” McBride said. “But we have
some players who have a lot of expe
rience.”
Anderson said he thought there
was plenty of talent in the younger
players.
r‘We’H miss some of the guys, but
you can always rebuild,” he said. “We
should be all right.”
McBride said he was concerned
about the lack of depth among the
defensive backs.
The Huskers lost safeties Tyrone
Byrd and Steve Carmer along with
comerback Kenny Wilhite from last
year’s team.
But McBride said he thought there
were several athletes who would be

able to fill in.
Toby Wright, Kareem Moss, Troy
Dumas and Barron Miles should be
able to gain experience this spring and
join returning starter John Reece in
the secondary, he said.
McBride said he also thought spring
practice was beneficial because it gave
the defenseachance to practice against
an option offense. f'
One of the defense’s problems last
season, McBride said, was losing fo
cus on the rushing teams. f
McBride said one of the reasons
for last season’s loss to Iowa State was
the defense’s unfamiliarity with rush
ing teams.
One of his goals for the season is to
keep his team focused and ready to
play against all offensive sets.
“We spent most of the year last
year playing against one-back sets,”
he said. “We’re going to prepare for
(rushing) sets all season long this
year.”
Anderson said he hoped the de
fense would be able to improve on its
intensity and concentration.
“We need to maintain our intensity
all the timer” Anderson said.
“(Practice) has been pretty good so
far,” he said. “Everyone wants to
work hard and have a good season.”
