The trek included a tour bus fire last Thurs day outside of Denver that could have cost the band more than just clothing and luxury items. “It burned to the ground,” said Jimmy Ashhurst, Ju Ju Hounds bass guitarist. “The fire just took over the whole bus.” Everyone was able to get out of the bus, and a few suitcases were saved, he said. “We were scrambling around today buying things like socks and stuff,” Ashhurst said last Friday. But last week’s blaze was the exception to the Ju Ju Hound’s luck. The Ju Ju Hounds are touring in support of their self-tilled debut that was released late last year. The disc is about to achieve gold-record status in Japan, Ashhurst said. Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds are not new to the music scene. All the members formerly have been with other bands. Stradlin is best known for his prior membership in Guns N’ Roses. Ashhurst said that he met Stradlin while Guns N’ Roses and Ashhursl's previous band, Broken Homes, were making the rounds on the Los Angeles club circuit. About a year ago, Ashhurst said, he saw in the news that Stradlin had quit Guns N’ Roses. “He’s always been unpredictable,” Ashhurst said. “I didn’t know if he would decide to hang it up for good." Shortly after Stradlin left Guns N’ Roses, he called Ashhurst and the two began working together. They enlisted the help of guitarist Rick Richards and drummer Charlie Quintana, and the four recorded their debut on the Geffen Records label. Although the Ju Ju Hounds have received praise from critics, the response from the Ameri can music public has not been quite as warm. Ashhurst said that they “received a tepid response from MTV” for the band’s video for their first single, “Shuffle It All.” Because the video was only put into medium rotation, he said, he didn’t know if the Ju Ju Hounds would be making a video for their latest single, “Somebody’s Knockin.’” Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds are planning to finish this tour within five or six weeks, Ashhurst said, before going to Europe to play in spring festivals. Ashhurst said they were playing smaller venues where they could interact better with the audience. Following the band’s Omaha show, the members leu the warmth of their buses to sign autographs and pose for pictures—something that is rare on many tours.
