Kappa Alpha Psi sends words of pride
to African-American women on campus
Celebrating, studying and dis
covering true history is an action
that should not be performed only
one month out of a year, but every
day ofour lives. This action enables
a people to better u nderstand itself.
1'his action enables a people to
know the past so that the rugged
road in the present and to the fu tu re
may be traveled and overcome.
This action enables brothers to
-^obtain the knowledge and to ex
press the love and respect that our
sisters rightfully and justifiably de
serve.
Do you know Edmonia Lewis?
She was the first African American
to achieve national recognition in
the field of sculpture. She was born
in Grecnhigh, Ohio, in 1845 and
created her first exhibit in 1871,
when she was identified as one of
the leading 19th-century American
^sculptors.
Do you know Madame C.J.
Walker? She was the first African
American woman millionaire who
obtained her wealth through the
manufacturing ofcosmeticsand hair
preparations. One of her inven
tions was the straightening comb.
Madame C.J, Walker di*i not let her
success change who she. was and
what she wanted to accomplish.
Do you know Maggie L. Walker?
She was the first African-American
woman banker. At 22, she began
workingin agroupcalledthclnde
pendcntOrclerof Si. Luke. Because
of this society’s increased member
ship, a result of Maggie Walker’s
leadership, a bank was formed. She
also served as the Virginia state
president of the National Associa
tion for the Advancement of Col
ored People.
Do you know Gwendolyn
Brooks? She was the first African
American Pulitzer-Prize winner a nd
the proud author of a collection of
poems called "Annie Allen.” She
a|so won the Poetry Workshop
Award at the Midwestern Writers
Conference and in 1968 became
the Illinois Poet Laureate, an achieve
ment not received by any African
American before her.
These are women who have
made great accomplishments and
achievements for the African-Ameri
can race, this country called
America, and the entire world. Wre,
the Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity, Inc., would like to make
a special dedication to all oursisters
on the UNL campus.

For those who do not have that
special Valentine, and also for those
who do: Take time to meet and
make new friends on this day and
throughout the year. Although we
African Americans were brought to
a strange land, we should not be
strangers to one another.
But it is important and necessary
for us, Kappa Alpha Psi, to give
recognition and express apprecia
tion for strong black women at
UNL; for, without you on this cam
Cus, there would not be any strong
lack brothers. It is important that
we learn to respect one another for
what we are, and love one another
for what wc possess inside and not
through material things.
The time has come for us to
support one another and stand up
for what our past brothers and
sisters fought for and believed in.
The time nas come to read and
study true history so that we pos
sess the knowledge of how valu
able the African-American woman
and man really are, and so that
respect and love for one another
may be achieved.

think the Valentine’s Day love thing
was a bit out of control.
I don’t purposefully think so
negatively. Really. I revel in my
friends’ latest love affairs. I always
have a shoulder available for crying
on, if necessary, and I always hope
it won't be necessary..
But it is, a lot.
I’m on a tangent again, but this
is what the whole Valentine’s thing
docs to me (and millions of other,
apparently): Itscramblesmysenses
And I don’t like it when that
happens. I certainly never let any
one person scramble those senses.
I don’t like the idea of succumbing
to the whims of another. I don’t
wanttobecomca perpetrator ofthe
co-dependency crime.
Thai’s what Feb. 14 should be
renamed. Co-dependency Day.
Then we could approach it com
pletely differently. Instead of send
ing cards, flowers and chocolates,
we could form support groups and
hit the talk show circuit.
And leave all the cards in the
dust. Put the candy companies out
of business. Celebrate being whole
on your own. You know — inde
pendent.
