“When I walked off the mat, I
knew it wasn’t me out there,” he
said. “If my career would have been
over then, I would have become one
of those guys who sits in the bar all
day and talks about how good he
was.”
Despite the lows, Olson said he
never seriously considered quitting
the sport.
“Every athlete has to question
themselves once in a while,” he
said. “But without wrestling,.I
wouldn’t be happy.”
Olson, who is 20-2 and ranked
No. 2 in the country this season,
said he would rather not look back
on his career as a scries of peaks
and valleys.
“I don’tjikc to think about the
peaks and valleys because then I
tend to concentrate on the valleys
too much,” he said.
Yet it would be difficult for

Olson to ignore the many peaks
during his career.
The senior criminal justice major
has already been named an All
American twice. He is just the
seventh wrestler in Huskcr history
to post 100 career victories, and he
ranks second in career pins at
Nebraska.
Olson said the highlight of his
career came earlier this season
when the Huskers upset the top
ranked Iowa Hawkeycs in the
, semifinals of the National Dual
Meet Championships at the NU
Coliseum.
“They were the team to beat,” he
said. “And everyone on our team
came together and did what they
were supposed to do.”
And Olson is confident he will
find another peak this season — the
national championship.
Coaches Tim Neumann, Mark
Cody and Brad Penrith arc great
motivators who will help him
achieve his goal, he said.
Teammate Matt Lindland, who is
ranked No. 1 in the nation, also
motivates Olson.
“A lot of motivation comes from
my teammates,” he said. “This year,
Malt has helped me pick up my
own intensity.”
But no matter what happens,
Olson said, the highs will always
stick out in his mind.
“Even if it was all over tomor
row, I’d still have happy memo
ries,” he said.

“He missed two weeks, so I thought
he had a good nine, 10 minutes — I
thought when he came in the game he
helped us,” Nee said. “Hcrcally helps
us when that jump shot starts falling
and I think it will.
“I think Tom Best will win a game “
before it’s over.”
Nee might not have had the chance
to have Best winning games in a 1

But another factor for choosing
Jcbraska was the prospect of playing
n the NCAA tourney, because “I
wanted to go to a program where I
ould make going to the NCAA tour
amcnl — I think that’s part of the
cason 1 came here.”
Best said he wanted to make more
f a contribution to the buskers in
icir search of a NCAA tourney berth.
“I’m kind of hard on myself, but
’m not really having a good year at
11,” he said. “They haven’t seen the

rill.”
