Solution to last week’s puzzle: A
player is said to have the opposition
whenever the kings are one square apart
and it's the other player's move. In the
diagrammed position, black's plan is to
advance the pawn with the aid of the king
to the eighth rank, forcing white to give
up the rook. To prevent this, white’s king
must somehow catch up with the pawn. I.
Rd2ll d4 2. Rdll White has now gained
tire opposition while placing the rook as
far away from black’s king as possible.
This will prevent black from gaining a
vital tempo later on by attacking the rook.
2.... Kd5 The best try. 3. Kd7!!l Keeping
the opposition. Now if 3.... Kc4 4. Ke€ d3
5. Ke5 Kc3 6. Ke4 d2 7. Ke3 catches the

pawn. Notice that any other first move for
white would have only drawn, since the
white king would not have been in time to
catch the pawn.
