The dreadlocks-wearing Hischkc
had his own take. “It’s never com
pletely what you’d call funk, com
pletely what you’d call ska, com
pletely what you’d call industrial. It’s
just a whiff of each particular musical
fragrance.”
As Dixieland jazz played in the
background, he summed it up: “We’d
rather go on vacation through lots of
different aural atmospheres, and smell
all the flowers and drink all the ale,
then make sense musically.”
In addition tocatching Roosevelt’s
“aural atmospheres” live, you can
also hear them on KRNU. There, they
have won at least one fan in sopho
more disc jockey Dave Thiele.
“They’re my favorite local band. I
appreciate a band that goes out of the
way to break the norms of the Lincoln
m usic scene. They don ’ t attempt to be
alternative, just weird,” he $aid.
Roosevelt Franklin is also a young
band — three members are UNL
freshmen and two are high school
seniors. Starck said they are gearing
up to record an album for Lincoln -
based Fire Records.
“Fol lowed by a double-1 ive album,
a best of, a dance remix album, as well
as five solo albums like Kiss did,”
added Hischke. They will also be
appearing in the second annual Big
Red Rock-o-Rama in February.
For now, they are ready to hit
Duffy’s on Super Bowl Sunday. The
regular 21-and-over show will be at
10:30 p.m., but Roosevelt will also be
playing an earlier all-ages show at
7:30 p.m., so no one has an excuse to
miss it.
Thackery

Although Thackery has played on
numerous recording labels, his cur
rent recording on Blind Pig is a debut
of a new Thackery — slimmed down
from a six-man band to a lean three
some.
The first track, “Paying the Cost to
be the Boss,” a song by Riley King,
introduces Thackery’s extraordinary
vocals.
His vocals are matched only by his
frantic fretting at breakneck speed on
the guitar instrumentals, such as Stevie
Ray Vaughan’s “Rude Mood” on
“Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers.”
While Thackery may have a pen
chant for playing covers by Vaughan
and Hendrix, “Getting Tired of Wait
ing,” and a flowing blues number,
“Empty Arms Motel” attest to this
bluesman’s suppressed song-writing
ability — suppressed because he
should have included more composi
tions of his own.
Besides his recorded music, what’s
equally impressive arc the reviews
raving about Thackery’s live perfor
mances. More than once, Thackery
was labeled “one of the best while
blues guitarists alive today.”
So great, that in 1991, “Guitar
Magazine” nominated Thackery as
guitar player of the year. Thackery
ended up ranking second, beat out
only by Johnny Winter.
