Singer Continued from Page 13 banners to sec the menu board. Another sign of Nebraska authen ticity was the sight of the Husker Southem Cal game on the television (tape delayed) and the numerous Ne braska fans hanging on to every bas ket without finding out what the real score was of the game that had ended an hour earlier. When I first saw the game on TV, I exclaimed how horrible the game was for Huskcr fans with Nebraska losing by 10 points. Consequently, I was nearly hanged by a tree for re vealing the outcome of the long awaited game that had just begun for these Huskcr faithfuls. Despite not making loo many ^ friends from the onset, I was spared bodily harm by explaining I was a student at the University 01 Ncbraska Lincoln. All of this should have disposed any doubts I had that the owner and patrons were true Huskcr fans. So enter Vcm Stacy, owner of the pub, and enter a sort of quiz I had for him to test his Husker legitimacy. Stacy, a native of Linwood, Neb., first gave me a routine description of his love for the Huskers. “I’m the fanatic Nebraska fan,”, Stacy said. “I live and die with Ne braska athletics, especially Nebraska football.” OK, that was easy. But how about the difference between Nebraska’s feelings toward Oklahoma and Colo rado? “I respect Oklahoma; we’ve had years of tradition and great rivalries with them,” he said. “But Colorado came from a fly-by-night nowhere into some football prominence; with their general treatment and their atti tude of hatred toward Nebraska, I despise Colorado.” But what finally sold me on this Golden Slate Husker was when he told me: “Most Nebraskans think if it doesn’t have a point at each end, it’s not a ball.” v It soon dawned on me that this truly was more than an average bar and could be belter described as a sanctuary for those departed Nebras kans who had left the Husker nest for the West Coast. Upon my departure, I swear stand ing outside I could hear the faint verses of“HailVarsity”amid thetypi cal sounds of gunfire and sirens echo ing throughout the city.
