    Torretta wants title
to go with Heisman
NEW YORK (AP) — Most col
lege football players would be satis
fied with one Heisman Trophy and
two national championships. NotGino
Torretta.
After winning the Heisman on Sat
urday, the Miami quarterback set his
sights on a third national title. Torretta
can achieve his goal by leading the
top-ranked Hurricanes over No. 2
Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.
“I’m ready to go for the national
championship,” he said. “It would be
a perfect way to end my college ca
reer.”
If Miami beats Alabama, he will
become the firsit quarterback in 17
years to lead his* team to consecutive
national championships.
“My main goal was to leave Miami
with more wins than any other quar
terback, and I did that,” said Torretta,
whose 26-1 record as a starter is belter
than Vinny Testaverde, Steve Walsh,
Craig Erickson, Bemie Kosar and Jim
Kelly.
Testaverde, who won the Heisman
in 1986, is the only other Miami player
to win the coveted award. His backup
that season was Geoff Torretta, one of
Gino’s three older brothers.
“I was very happy when Vinny
won, but obviously it means even
more when your brother wins,” said
Geoff, who was at the Downtown
Athletic Club for both announce
ments. “I can’t think of anyone more
deserving than Gino. They couldn’t
have made a better choice.”
Torretta won by a comfortable
margin over his closest challengers,
running backs Marshall Faulk of San
Diego State and Garrison Hearst of
Georgia. Torretta, the most prolific
passer in Miami history, got more
first-place votes than Faulk and Hearst
combined.
Volleyball

The Huskcrs, who were without
Thatcr for the Big Eight Tournament
because of her sprained ankle, lost to
the 15th-rankcd Buffaloes in the fi
nals of the conference tourney in
Omaha.
But Nebraska was able to rebound
against Colorado five days later with
out Thater and defeat the Buffaloes
for the third lime this season to ad
vance to the second round of the
NCAA’s Midcasl Regional.
Nebraska volleyball coach Terry
Pettit said one of the achievements he
was most proud of in his team this
year didn’t happen on the court, but
rather in the classroom.
Four of the six first-team rccipi
cnison the Phillips 66 Academic All
Big Eight Conference team were
Huskers.
“I think the thing that pleases me
the most is the type of students we
have in our program,” said Pettit, as a
total of seven of his players were
honored for their academic accom
plishments this year.
He said that the hardest thing to
deal with this season was Thaler’s
injury, which limited the All-Ameri
can in playing time in Nebraska’s
season-ending loss last week.
“Obviously we were disappointed
with Stephanie’s injury; it marked a
tremendous feat which we couldn’t
overcome,” Pettit said.
He said though that no matter what
happened during the year, he was
proud that his team always came to
play and that “the effort was always
there.”
