Renaissance England comes to Nebraska theppr By Stacey McKenzie Senior Reporter Christmas will return to the days of Renaissance England Saturday, Sun day and Dec. 19, when the Renais sance Madrigal Syngers put on “A Madrigal Christmasse Fcaste.” Jan Dickinson, co-producer of the feast, said Dance City of Omaha, 7117 Jones Circle, will be transformed — at least in atmosphere — into a 16th century castle. Dickinson will become the lady of th<^ manor, the wife of the Earl of Essex, who also will make an appear ance. The night begins with the strolling minstrels, who will mingle with guests for cocktails from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. At 7 p.m., guests will be seated in preparation for the procession of the 22 performers, which includes a court jester and kitchen wench. Performers will sing in between the courses of the traditional English dinner, which will include roast joint of beef, Yorkshire pudding and hot spiced waffles. Dessert will signal the beginning of the true Madrigal concert, Dickinson said. One of the night’s high points will be the Court Jester’s version of “The Twelve* Days of Christmas,” Dickinson said. “Everybody saw it last year,” she said, “and hoped he would do itagain.” This will be the second year for the dinner. When all the feasting’s done, Dickinson said, people can stay and dance. In preparation for their feast, the Renaissance Madrigal Syngers have spent about six weeks rehearsing, learning music and adding movement to their show. They have some new props this year, Dickinson said, including a tap estry, coats of arms and banners. The group was formed from people Dickinson had forked with in com munity theaters iriOmaha and Coun cil Bluffs, Iowa. This year, she said, there arc seven new singers. Dickinson said she was sure that “A Madrigal Christmasse Fcastc” would catch on. In just one year, she said, they’ve increased their seating capacity per night from 15 to 250. This year, the group will perform six shows for corporate Christmas par ties. “It’s one of those traditions that once people attend it, it usually be comes a Christmas tradition,” she said. The show is produced by Dickinson and Dwayne Ibsen in cooperation with Ibsen Costume Gallery. Paris Continued from Page 12 thinlcParis is criticizing the majority, but in the last half of this LP, Paris turns his anger toward the black com munity and addresses some issues that face black people in America. “The Days of Old” is a cut in which Paris discusses the gang issue, black on-black crime and genocide within the black community. This is one of the better songs on “Sleeping With the Enemy” be cause Paris talks about the rich history of Africans and points to the fact that the black community should stop blaming the white community for its problems. Paris is also able to let the listener see where he is coming from with the most profound statement on the entire LP, “I’m not pro-human because not all humans are pro-black.” “Rise” and “Assista’s song” are tunes that address black women and the pride that black women should have for themselves. Paris goes out and makes a stand where a lot of rappers fall down at when they write son s demonstrates his pride and respect for the black woman through the strength of his music, and at the same lime he sends a message to the men that they should treat these women right. Paris has put together a good LP. “Sleeping W ith the Enemy”addresscs a lot of issues ranging from the gov emmentto the black community. Paris at times seems angry with the world, and through his music he is able to effectively let the listeners feel where he comes from. Still, Paris is a positive rapper. He has his opinions, but he is able to back up these with reasons as to why he feels the way he does. Overall, Paris is a force to be rcck reckoned with and his LP is a defi nite must-buy. _ _ — Anthony D.
