A display of ice-fishing decoys . will be featured beginning Tuesday through Jan. 7 at Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. The wooden decoys, ranging from large to small, realistic to abstract, can be traced to the late 1800s. Courtney McKenzie, intern at the Sheldon Gallery, stjid the Native Americans created the decoys to lure fish to the hole they had cut in the ice. The decoys were moved up and down in the water, imitating the motion of fish in distress. As fish were attracted to the de coys, they were speared, she said. This tradition was passed to the early American settlers of Michigan, Min nesota and Wisconsin. The decorative and visual charac teristics of these hand-carved fish decoys have been a fundamental as pect of the craft, McKenzie said. “I think they arc interesting be cause each one is so different,” McKenzie said. Each decoy has its own character, some resembling real fish, such as bass and perch, and some showing color and forni unlike real fish. The abstract decoys may be white w ith red polka dots, for example. The lost tradition of these lures and the skill required to make them is* what brought them to their stature of folk art today, McKenzie said. Because spearfishing is illegal in most states, McKenzie said, the inter est in decoys began to shift toward a folk art collector’s item. Th is col lection of decoys was given to the gallery to exhibit by Mr. and Mrs. John Bcrggrucn of San Fran cisco. Madonna Continued from Page 9 able lo pull this off by using her familiar dance sound and by adding in some TcxXMex beats. Everyone knows Madonna can do some crazy things, but sometimes people seem to forget about the raw singing ability she possesses. Madonna slows it down on “Bad Girl” and shows the world shccan still bell out the ballads. “Rain” is the best ballad on “Erotica” and one of the better cuts overall. This song will make the lis tener wonder: “How can Madonna make music like this, and yet be so weird ai the same lime?” What makes “Erotica” such a good album is the fact that Madonna is able to appeal to everybody. There is mu sic here for the house music fan, there is music for the ballad seekers, and there is even music here for the hip hop fans. “Waiting” is one of those cuts on the hip-hop tip in which Madonna lets the beat work to her advantage. She is able to work the listener with her off beat seductive raps. “Did You Do It” is an extension of “Waiting” where Madonna employs some rappers who talk about “hillin’ it and splittin’ it.” “Secret Garden” is the last cut on “Erotica” and it is a fitting ending to ihc latest chapter of one of the greatest pop artist of our time. Overall, “Erotica” is one of the best LPs Madonna has ever made. People seem to get down on Madonna for being weird, but if nobody was to ever see her and just hear her music, they would think Madonna was a genius. Nevertheless, she is a genius. Madonna is able to pull her music together and give the listening audi ence something that has been void for the last few albums. So for all the people out there who think that Madonna is loo weird to buy, don’t worry, it’s your loss not ours. — Anthony D. Speights Trek J Continued from Page 9 and reused in the filming of different episodes. In these paragraphs the reader also learns of the tremendous shaping force of budgets upon scripts and sets alike, a problem also repeatedly faced by those involved in production of the original series. Also revealing arc Nemecek’s records of revisions, or droppings, of scripts and the means by which ideas or characters progressed through sev eral stages before coming to the screen. Like reading a critical article be fore reading a novel, it can be useful to read about a “Star Trek: TNG” episode before viewing the same, for there is so much more going on than may first meet the eye. The most scrutinizing viewers will find enough detailed material in this book to be pleased, yet there is enough general information to reward the less committed viewer without being drowned in trivia. Whether one is a hard-core Trck ker or the uncertain recipient of an unrequested gift, “Star Trek: TNG Companion” is a valuable compen dium of facts and history that can add a great deal to the enjoyment to all viewers of “Star Trek: TNG.” A University-wide canned gcxxis drive will take place on Nov. 16-20. CAN-IT boxes for dona tions will be located at the front desk of each Resi dence Hall, Greek house, and at CORNERSTONE (640 North 16th). Contributions will be given to the Malone Community Center Thanksgiving Basket Project. Sponsored by UMH E-CORNERSTONE.
