Inconsistency of artist’s songs leaves listeners with flat feeling '\ieAjXmJ4 “Jacci McGhee” Jacci McGhee MCA Records Jacci McGhee first showed up in 1989 on the smash Keith Sweat single “Make It Last Forever,” and fans have been waiting for her to drop an LP every since. Well, the wait is over and the new Jacci McGhee album has arrived with much fanfare. The self-titled LP opens up with “Something On My Mind,” which is not a very good song. It’s somewhat flat and it doesn’t have any flare. “It Hurts Me” is a tunc that features ; Keith Sweat. The pair seems to be a winning combination when they hook up together. This song is one of the better ones on the LP. Jacci McGhee attempts to kick her album into high gear with “Skeeza,” an up-tempo, funky cut that McGhee is able to jump on, but comes across to the listener as flat. At the beginning of this song it has the makings of a winner, but as the song continues, something seems to be missing. “What Are You Gonna Do” and “The Other Woman” are tunes that McGhee jumps on, and they appeal to the listener. These tunes get the atten tion of the listener and gel the job done. By far the best tune that Jacci * McGhee has to offer is a remake of Roberta Flack’s “The Closer I Get To You,” a sultry duet sang with John James. On this cut McGhee’s talent is on display. James complements McGhee and this duet works well. One of the downfalls of the disc is that there are some songs that are not very good. McGhee suffers at times from inconsistency. She also has a distinct voice that may take some getting use to. It has a Courtesy of MCA Records Jacci McGhee offers 10 tracks on her debut, “Jacci McGhee.” sassy twang to it that might make the listener apprehensive at first. Overall this is a good first effort from McGhee. She shows a lot of promise and proves that her 1989 debut with Keith Sweat was no fluke. With time her inconsistencies should give way to better quality music. There are 10 songs on this LP. Thatgives the listener ampleopportu nity to judge for themselves whether this is a safe purchase. Just a word of advice: If you pur chase this LP, listen to it a time or two before you pass judgment. This is the type of LP that definitely must grow on you. — Anthony D.
