“Crosstime Traffic”
Lawrence Watt-Rvans
Del Rey Books
By Sam Kepfield
Staff Reporter
Sometimes you can judge a book
by its cover. Any book that features a
flying saucer with Minnesota license
plates deserves a look.
Lawrence Watl-Evans made a
name for himself in fantasy with the
“Lords of Dus” series and titles such
as “The Cyborg and the Sorcerer” and
“The Wizard and the War Machine”
billed as “science fantasy.”
His first strictly science-fiction
novel, “Nightsidc City,” appeared in
1990.
“Crosstime Traffic” is a collection
of short stories centering on one theme
— parallel universes.
The two lead stories, “Why 1 Left
Harry’s All-Night Hamburgers” and
“A Flying Saucer With Minnesota
Plates” (the source for the cover art),
tell of a diner in the West Virginia
wilderness. It becomes a stopping
point for traffic between parallel
worlds, because it exists in all of
them.
“An Infinity of Karen” is a story of
love and loss with a tragic, twisted
ending.
“Storm Trooper” presents a world
beset with disturbances that drop
pieces of alternate realities into our
world.
“Science Fiction” is a tribute to
Robert Hcinlcin and one of his early
juveni lc novels, “RockclshipGalilco,”
in which two boys in a space colony
build and fly a homemade rocket.
“Monster Kidnaps Girl at Mad
Scientist’s Command” is an amusing
talc that turns on a risque double
entendre.
“Windwagon Smith and the Mar
tians” is a tall talc with one of the Old
West’s legendary characters.
“Crosstime Traffic” showcases
Watl-Evans’ talent with a difficult
format — the short story and the
short-short story (one or two pages).
All arc tantalizing glimpses into what
might have been — or what may be
somewhere else.
It also has one more thing to rec
ommend it. The price is only $3.99 —
and it’s been a few years since a
paperback has cost so little.
Hopefully, the publishing industry
may be waking up to the fact that
S5.00 or even S6.00 for a paperback
may be a bit much, especially for
college students on tight budgets.
$3.00 per day for 15 words on individual student

$4.00 per day for 15 words on non-student ads.
