Pawnee Lake offers sweet autumn journey
I’m all for packing meals before road trips.
Pawnee Lake is not all that far from Lincoln,
but a few morsels could not possibly hurt. A
road trip is a road trip, after all, and part of the
fun lies in making the journey enjoyable.
I finished off a stale peanut butter and jelly
sandwich before leaving the parking lot, so I
forced a fine glazed doughnut to wait until I
pulled off West 0 Street and could watch the
almost bare branches of trees swaying while I
was munching.
Pawnee Lake is probably the closest of the
local lakes, so I have made several prior trips.
The camping is good as long as there are not
many others about, and there is always some
place to walk or sit by oneself.
While driving, my thoughts typically focus
on what I will be doing once I arrive at the lake,
so this was the first time I paid more attention
to the drive than to the lake itself.
Getting out of Lincoln, even if only a few
miles away, is always relaxing. Just crossing
the O Street viaduct can bring a great sense of
release, as if all stresses and deadlines have
been left behind, fading quickly in the rearview
mirror and falling away from consciousness.
I let my eyes play and wander more than
usual, roaming from one side of the road to the
other, noting all of the places I would like to
stop for an afternoon or even for a few minutes.
I decided to fill my cars as well, but with the
demise of KFMQ, the selection of radio stations
in my AM-only car is poor. In KFMQ’s place is
some new country station, which seems to have
only 20 songs in its entire rotation. Many of
those I heard on the drive out and back.
Still, it seemed somehow appropriate to
listen to country songs while driving to the lake
on a fine autumn day, far from the cold of winter

but just cool enough to enjoy the heater and its
warm smell.
I drove out in late afternoon, so the sun was
glaring at me the whole time and reduced my
eyes toa pair of squinting crescents. Once at the
lake, the sun’s reflection continued to exert the
same influence on me. It called to me even as
it pushed me away.
I felt as if I had closed my eyes to vast
worries and troubles and was looking into the
grey-green depths of the lake that promised
some great liberating revelation.
Much of the lake can be seen from the road,
but sitting in or on one’s car does not satisfy. I
wanted to walk about, to feel everything rather
than merely watching it.
I felt like wandering through the hills and
reaching Lincoln at dawn after a night-long
walk, feeling the bend of legs, the crunch and
rustle of dry grass, cool hands stuffed in pock
ets.
After sitting on the hood of my car, I moved
into the grass and watched the impossibly long
shadows of evening engulf me.
I might have sat at the lake all night, but once
in the car, I might also have driven it all night.
Even gravel roads seem sublime on an autumn
evening, despite the ridiculous speed bumps
someone had set up.
Before returning to the pavement, I saw a
sign advertising honey for sale so I pulled onto
a gravel driveway nearly as wide as the road.
Six dogs unleashed an unholy furor, but only
one was loose. He seemed nice enough, but I
treaded carefully and thought it must be some
kind of honey. I paid a dollar for my jar and left,
trying not to run over the dog who circled my
car.
Dipping my finger into the jar and realizing
I might be late for an event that evening, I soon
began to regret the return to Lincoln. But the
honey was sweetly transporting, and it is, as
Leonard Woolf wrote, the journey, not the
arrival, that matters.
