Huskers do their homework
Nebraska expects
complex offense
By Nick Hytrek
Senior Reporter_
Nebraska football coaches spent
as much time walking to the pencil
sharpener as they did to the practice
field this week.
With all the timcihcy had to spend
charting Missouri’s offensive forma
tions, the pencils in the football office
arc undoubtedly shorter after prepar
ing for the Tigers.
“They do a lot of things offen
sively,” Nebraska coach Tom Osborne
said. “They run 57 different sets is I
think what we have charted.”
All those sets added up to a lot of
paperwork for Cornhuskcr coaches.
“Our defensive scouting break
down looks kind of like a telephone
book,” Osborne said. “(Missouri) run
every pass play known to man. And,
surprisingly, mostof the running plays
ever invented. So it makes it a little
tougher defensively just to get lined
up correctly and not have yourself
exposed in some area.”
The No. 8 Huskcrs will sec if their
preparation has paid off Saturday at
Faurot Field in Columbia, Mo. Kick
off between the 4-1 Huskcrs, 1-0 in
the Big Eight, and the Tigers, 1 -5 and
0-2, is at 1 p.m.

Colorado to challenge NU
for Big Eight volleyball title
By Jeff Singer
Senior Reporter _
There will be a couple of rarities
for the Nebraska volleyball team in
this weekend’s match against Colo
rado.
Not only arc the Comhuskers ex
pected to be challenged by a B ig Eight
opponent, but Nebraska also will need
a win to stay in the hunt for a confer
ence title.
The Huskcrs have accumulated a
career 222-6-1 Big Eight record and
have won 16 consecutive conference
titles, but that streak could be in jeop
ardy when they lace Colorado 7:30
p.m. Saturday at the NU Coliseum.
The Buffaloes have been creating
a stir this season as they have stam
peded over their Big Eight rivals and
netted a 6-0 conference record and a
15-3 overall mark.
Nebraska volleyball coach Terry
Pettit said his team would need to
overcome 13lh-rankcd Colorado if
the Huskcrs were to win another Big
Eight title this year.
“It’sa very important match,” Pettit
said. “If you want to win the BigEight
championship, you’ve got to beat the
best team other than yourself.”
Nebraska middle blocker
Stephanie Thatcr, who leads the Husk
crs with a .368 hitting percentage,
said Saturday’s match was important
for Nebraska.
“It’s going to be a big match,”
Thatcr said. “We’re the goal of Colo

rado every year.”
Colorado volleyball coach Brad
Saindon said a victory over Nebraska
would be one of the biggest wins in
Buffalo volleyball history.
“We’re playing pretty well, but it’s
a pretty big chore to beat Nebraska,’’
Saindon said. “It’s good to see how
we play against one of the best teams
in the nation.”
The fifth-ranked Huskers are com
ing off of a 15-2,15-4,15-5 pounding
of Kansas State. The win over the
Wildcats increased Nebraska’s over
all mark to 12-2 and conference record
to 6-0, lying the Buffaloes for first
place in the Big Eight.
Thaler said if the Huskers play
with the same intensity they had
against Kansas State, then the Colo
rado match should be a formality.
“If we’re at our lop level, they
won’t beat us,” Thaler said.
The Buffaloes have had trouble
beating Nebraska in the past, as the
Huskers have a 13-0 career record
against them. Nebraska swept both of
its matches against Colorado last year.
The Buffaloes arc led by their set
ter Nicole Vranesh. The junior earned
all-conference honors last season and
has been vital to Colorado’s perfect
Big Eight record so far this year.
Pettit said that players 1 ike Vranesh
had helped the Buffaloes establish a
trademark as a good passing team.
“They’re a good ball-handling
team, and they stay organized when
things break down,” Pettit said.
The Huskers arc also expecting a
big crowd to show up for the match
Saturday night. Nebraska broke the
Coliseum record with 4,373 fans in
last week’s Oklahoma match and lead
the nation with an average of 2,955
fans per home match.
Osborne praises Hill for Butkus honor
From Staff Reports _
Nebraska coach Tom Osborne look
lime out alter Thursday’s practice to
praise Comhuskcr outside linebacker
Travis Hill.
Hill was named as one of 10 semi
finalists for the Bulkus Award on
Thursday, which is given to the
nation’s most outstanding linebacker.
“It’s a nice honor for Travis,’’
Osborne said. “I think he is very dc
serving.”
“We’ve had some excellent out
side backers here and he certainly
ranks right with them,” Osborne said.
“He’s not as big as Broderick Tho
mas, or as fast as Mike Crocl, but
Travis provides all phases of the
game."
Osborne praised Hill’s dedication
to academics and athletics.
“You couldn’t ask for anything
more out of a player other than what
Travis has given us.”
The three finalists for this year’s
award will be announced on Nov. 19,
andlhcwinnerannounccdonDcc. 12.
Osborne also said on Thursday that
linebacker Mike Anderson will not
make the trip to Missouri with the rest
of the team for this weekend’s game
against the Tigers.
Anderson had his knee scoped on
Tuesday, and is still “pretty sore,”
Osborne said.

Tigers hope to show
own arsenal vs. NU
By Jeff Singer
Senior Reporter
With Saturday’s football game
between Missouri and Nebraska
being the Tigers’ homecoming,
Missouri is hoping for some fire
works against the eighth-ranked
Comhuskers.
But Tiger coach Bob- Stull is
hoping Nebraska isn’t the team that
explodes this weekend.
“They have a lot of weapons —
you can’t lock into one thing,’’Stull
said. “Everybody says how they’re
so one-dimensional, but they do
more different types of things than
anybody in the country.”
Stull said the Huskers, who will
battle the Tigers at 1 p.m. at
Missouri’s Faurot Field in Colum
bia, Mo., might ruin the homecom
ing festivities with their offensive
arsenal.
But the Tigers have some weap
ons of their own, including sopho
more quarterback Jeff Handy.
