    Michael Penn’s second album
exposes his poetic influences
“Free For All”
Michael Penn
RCA
Michael Penn’s second release,
“Free For All,” is splendid for its
marginality.
Penn has traveled to the outskirts
of his musical style with more folk
music influences and a more aggres
sive presentation.
He is in a much purer form than he
was on his debut, “March,” which
garnered him MTV’s Best New Artist
award in 1990.
Penn picked up the award the same
year that Milli Vanilli did. He claims
that he actually was the ONLY win
ner.
It’s understandable.
The songs that fill up “Free Foi
All” have an intense emotional qual
ity, yet each phrase is pieced togethei
so tightly that there’s no wallowing tc
be found.
Penn is as much a poet as he is a
musician.
[ He has obviously mastered the cre
ative use of deadpan irony.
Check out these lyrics:
“Bells clang/I guess it’s a holiday/
Did that rhymc?/Shil! 1’mapoctnow.”
For the most part, “Free For All” is
an acoustic endeavor.
There are many guest musicians
on the album who add a richness of
instruments, voices and styles to
Penn’s creations.
One of the most lyrically enter
taining songs is “Seen the Doctor.”
Here Penn adeptly swerves from the
lyrical to the metaphorical.
The song starts a woman assisting
in a heart surgery; the patient loves
her:
“I loved a girl once beyond com
parc/She saw inside me and gave me
air/She was assisting my surgery/My
heart was opened as she put a mask on
me/l’m breathing but it’s become a
chore/’Now that you’ve seen the doc
tor don’t call me anymore.’”

Michael Penn
It’s a tough call when comparing
sounds, but there are a lot of similari
ties between Penn and Matthew Sweet.
Penn also could be a good buddy of
Joe Jackson, lyrically, as they each
seem adept with witty lyrics.
Fans of Jackson or Sweet or any
one even close should check out Penn.
He’s up, up, up ... and coming.
