NU’s campuses each face 1.4 percent cut By Andy Raun Staff Reporter __ The University of Nebraska’s four campuses will take equivalent bud getary hits to absorb a mid-year state funding cut, the university president told the NU Board of Regents Friday. Martin Massengale said the Uni versity of Nc braska-Lincoln, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the Uni versity of Ne braska at Kearney and the University of Nebraska Medical Center each would be re quired to cut about 1.4 percent from their budgets. The Nebraska Legislature, meet ing in special session last month, cut the university’s budget by aboutS4.27 million, or 1.4 percent. The cut was made as legislators tried to brace state government for a revenue shortfall. Massengalc said most of the re ductions would come from the cam puses’ operating budgets, but the cuts would not be across the board. Deci sions on permanent cuts will be made in the next several weeks, then pre sented to the regents for approval, he said. The campuses have comm ittccs of faculty members and administrators that evaluate budgets and determine where to make cuts when situations like thecurrentonc arise, Massengalc said. The university sustained about five mid-ycarbudgctcutsduring the 1980s, so the reduction process is familiar, Massengalc said. Still, he added, “I don’t think I need to remind anyone here how dis ruptive mid-year budget cuts can be.” Only one of the l ive mid-year cuts was larger than the one the university will take this year, and “there is no slack in the budget,’’ Massengalc said. Party Continued from Page 1 thought Perot changed the debate in favor of Clinton. “Perot is a person who is priming the people for Clinton,” he said. “Perot cracked jokes, but didn ’ t hi t any of the issues.” Hiffeman said he thought Perot could have been a bit more definitive ...about the issues. But to say Perot • didn’t belong in the debate is wrong, he said. “They (Bush and Clinton) didn’t give him the respect he deserved — they trivialized him by calling him Ross,” he said. “The fact that he was there makes a difference.” Hiffeman said Perot’s appeal was to the candidate’s own generation, and his job had been to tell them that their leadership had “run to the ground.” “Perot spoke from the heart, and he spoke the truth,” he said. “Clinton was rehearsed.” BulCaruso said he thoughtClinton set the tone for the following presi dential debates, and he was “by far the champion of the evening.” “If the debates continue like this, there will be no change in the polls,” Caruso said. Protest Continued from Page 1 “What I hope to see across campus is a trend to include diversity in all aspects ofourcurriculum,“Jolly said. Lavonne Holdener, a junior an thropology major and UNITE mem ber, said other students misunderstood Native American students. “We would like to see more com munication between other sudents and ourselves,” she said. “We are ex peeled lo get used lo the environment here -- it’s a barrier. Some of us arc com ing of f the reservation. They don * t understand us.” UNITE members viewed “Inci dent at Oglala” Friday at the Culture Center and discussed the film with Native Americans from the Sioux Falls Reservation in Yankton, S.D. UNITE members will have a silent rally at noon today at Broyhill Plaza to protest the celebration of Colum bus Day.
