|Ames Piano Quartet enchants Sheldon audience jement, Inc The Ames Piano Quartet is, from left: Mahlon Darlington, violin; George Work, cello; Laurence Burkhalter, viola; and William David, piano. _ comgfe£t|— By Jennifer McClure Staff Reporter Passionate is the only way to de scribe the Ames Piano Quartet’s per formance Saturday at the Sheldon Art Gallery. 'Hie quartet began the evening with a glimpse into the classical world of Johann Nepomuk Hummel, playing “Piano Quartet, Op. posth.” The intertwining harmonies, swell ing dynamics and piano solo gave the Andante cantabile movement a feel ing of relaxation that ended with a soft pizzicato in thp strings. The Allegro. con spirito movement provided a vi brant contrast to the andante and dis played the quartet’s expertise with tight entrances and exits. “Piano Quartet (1944)” by Carlos Surinach swept the audience into the world of 20th century music. The audience immediately was caught up in the Allegro deciso movement with mildly dissonant melodies. The muted strings created a tense atmosphere that seemed dark and se cretive. But the movement concluded with a racing finish of ascending and descending scales. The Lento (con intimo acento e cantando) and Vivo e con fuoco movements were dynamic with effective crescendos, decrescen dos and frequent trills. The effect was dramatic with an occasional sense of chaos. The evening concluded with the “Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25” by Johannes Brahms. The four move ments of the Brahms took the audi ence on a roller coaster ride of emo tions from the romantic sweetness of the andante con moto to the audience ’ s obvious favorite, the Rondo alia Zingarese: Presto. This movement snapped the lis- • teners out of the dream-like state cre ated by the Andante to an energetic dance-like frenzy of the Rondo. After the finish with dramatic sweeps of the bows and four return appearances to the stage for an ener getically appreciative audience, the quartet played an encore. Those who missed this impressive performance will be able to experi ence it later in the year with a taped broadcast by Nebraska Public Radio.
