    Novel’s action sequences lack punch
L.E. Modesitt, Jr.
“Timediver’s Dawn”
TOR Books
By Sam Kepfield
Staff Reporter
I’m always leery of writers who try
to combine science fiction with ele
ments of fantasy, creating that bastard
child known as “science fantasy.”
It rarely works. To my experience
the only writer who has carried it off
convincingly is Jack L. Chalker, who
wrote “And the Devil Will Drag You
Under” in 1982.
Modesitt is a promising writer,
with eight titles to his credit.
“Timediver’s Dawn” centers on
Sammis, a teenager living on a planet
under largely military rule.
When unknown forces called Frost
Giants attack planetary outposts, an
alert goes out. The military begins a
crackdown, which results in the burn
ing of Sammis’ house and the disap
pearance of his parents.
Sammis also has the ability to
“dive,” or move through time and
space by sheer mental power alone.
This mak&s him of great value to the
military when he is conscripted.
First he battles rebel elements of
the military, then tracks down the
Frost Giants themselves, destroying
them. To end the story , he defeats the
Napoleonic plans of his commanding
general.
The book has its problems, though.
Modesitt’s writing style is one of them.
He writes entirely in the present, over
using dialogue and never resorting to
enlightening narrative passages.
The reader never gets a good idea
where the Frost Giants come from or
what they really are.
The action sequences, such as the
final battle with the enemy, are anti
climactic, packing no punch.

growly quality gives Uncle
Tupelo’s sound a gruffness of the
folk singer or the camp-fire vocal
ist.
Farrar plays guitar, harmonica
and bass; Tweedy plays guitar; and
Mike Heidom plays drums, cym
bals and tambourine.
Guest musicians appear on the
release and give it an improvised
sound.
“Coalminers” tells — not sur
prisingly — the woeful story of a
coal miner:
“I was bom in old Kentucky in a
coal camp—bom and bred/I know
about old beans, bulldog gravy and
combread/I know how the miners
work and slave in the coal mines
every day, for a dollar in the com
pany store, for that is all they pay.”
Other songs, such as “Wipe the
Clock,” are less specific, but still
loaded with the feel of days of old:
“Tone it down, someone said no
story no pain/wipe the clock right
now/I despise what you crave/re
member you, when you wore a
different face/never heard a story
of anyone who drove the blacktop
and sang.”
Many of the 15 songs on “March
16-20, 1992,” which are the days
the release was recorded, are tied
neatly together with a galloping
rhythm that spirits the listener up
and over the saddle, and takes her
for a ride.
