(AP) — Off-the field troubles for Arizona State ath letes continued Tuesday when start ing quarterback Garrick McGee was suspended after a uniformed police man served him a summons while McGee was attending a class. Athletic Director Charles Harris also suspended linebacker Tim Smith, although Smith apparently had com plied with the orders of a Tempc justice of the peace and resolved the petty theft charge against him. The announcement came after the court closed for the day and it could not be determined immediately what conditions Smith had to fulfill to sat isfy the court. Both redshirt freshmen allegedly stole goods from two stores close to the campus last October and Decem ber. Clare Lane, McGee’s attorney, said he didn’t know full details but thought the thefts involved compact discs and T-shirts. The summons cites three counts of intent to commit theft. “There are a few bumps in the road, aren’t there,” first-year coach Bruce Snyder said. He gave former fourth-string quarterback Troy Rauer all the snaps during a two-hour prac tice Tuesday night. McGee did not practice. Rauer and backup Brad Belanger, a 5-foot-8 inch, 151-pound freshman, declined to comment. The Sun Devils open the season here against No. 2 Washington. They play No. 11 Nebraska on Sept. 26. “He got very, very nervous to night,” Snyder said of Rauer, another redshirt freshman. Snyder said he suggested the sus pension to Harris but kdded that he believed McGee’s story, that the quar terback hadn’t heard from the court in seven months and thought the matter had been closed. Holding out the possibility of rein statement, Snyder said, “I could do it tonight — if I had all the informa tion.” Snyder said he moved Rauer to outside linebacker last week because he wasn’t needed at quarterback. Grady Benton, who was in conten tion for the starting quarterback job last spring, and wide receiver Derrick Land are suspended for the game against the Huskies after pleading no contest to fraudulent use of a stolen credit card. JMLAA suspends Irish linebacker -SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)— Notre Dame linebacker Demetrius DuBosc was suspended by the NCAA for two games for accepting money from boosters. • Athletic Director Dick Rosenthal said DuBose will miss the season opener Saturday at Northwestern and the Sept. 12 game against Michigan. The NCAA ruled DuBose’s rela tionship with Grant and RoscCourtncy of Seattle violated NCAA rules when he accepted a §600 personal loan and other benefits iVom them. Courtney is president of the West ern Washington Notre Dame Alumni Club, and his wife is a former Notre Dam©' admissions officer. DuBosc grew up in Seattle. Under NCAA rules, a college ath lete loses amateur standing and be comes ineligible if he uses his athletic reputation, skill or payback potential as a professional athlete to obtain preferential treatment, benefits or ser vices. 1 me vtii- 63 PwB"«ncy rUK SAtt 64 Printing S Copying 68 Recycling 2 Appliances 72 Rentals 3 Bicycles 74 Tanning 4 Books 75 Tattooing 5 Clothing 76 Travel Jewelry *■ go Typing S Resumes 6 Computers 8 Furniture vnTirTC 9 Garage Sates MM K 8 MusicaMns truments cSSS, Evemte t3 Ofhoe Furniture 16 Soom-viaGMdtn! 120 GreekXlair* 8 iKff 140 Persona^°VernfTien' 19 Ticket Exchange . f' SFRV1CFS 149 I- undrasmg a
