in that area.
“The area we anticipate improve
ment in is setting, as both Nikki and
Christy (Johnson) need to raise their
level of play and they should be able
to do that,” Pettit said.
Nebraska’s non-conference sched
ule this season includes traditional
powers Pacific, New Mexico and
Pittsburgh in September’s FirsTier
Invitational; defending national cham
pion UCLA and Southern California
in the Big Eight-Pac 10 Challenge;
and the Big 10-Big Eight Challenge
against Illinois and Ohio State, the
team that knocked the Huskers out of
the NCAA tournament last year.
Pettit said the difficult non-con
ference schedule would allow his team
the opportunity to compete against
the best teams in the nation, even
though it might mean additional losses
for Nebraska.
“If our philosophy was ‘Let’s win
eight or nine matches real quick to
build up confidence,’ we wouldn’t be
doing that,” he said.
Pettit, who is Nebraska’s winningest
volleyball coach, said the Huskers’
schedule wouldn’t get easier when
the Big Eight season begins.
“The Big Eight is stronger,” he
said. “Oklahoma returns the most
physical team, Colorado will be a
very good team and Kansas will
improve and be a team that can com
pete with the top three teams,” Pettit
said.
The Huskcrs, ranked seventh in
Volleyball Magazine’s prcseason poll,
will move back into the NU Coliseum
for their season opener Sept. 1 against
the Nebraska Alumni.

Bob Devaney Sports Center due to
renovations to the 66-ycar-old Coli
seum.
Huskers face difficult schedule,
including UCLA, Pacific, Texas
By John Adkisson
Senior Editor
The Nebraska volleyball team’s
schedule isn’t just dotted with big
matches every now and then.
There’s a biggie every week.
‘it’sa typical Nebraska schedule,”
said Comhuskcr volleyball coach Terry
Pettit.
The Huskcrs, after an exhibition
against a team of former Nebraska
all-stars on Sept. 1, embark on a
September schedule that has them
playing three teams that beat them
last season.
Pacific and New Mexico come to
Lincoln for the FirsTicr Invitational
on Sept. 4-5, along with two-year
NCAA tournament participant Pitts
burgh.
The next week, Nebraska will take
its first road trip of the year — to
Champaign, 111., for the inaugural Big
Eight-Big Ten Challenge.
Ohio Stale and Illinois, two teams
both rated in preseason Top 20 polls,
will face the Huskers in Champaign.
The Buckeyes knocked Nebraska
out of the NCAA Tournament in a
match in Lincoln last December.
After a stretch of Big Eight matches
through most of October, Nebraska
will play three more Top 10 teams
when they face Texas at home and
play UCLA and Southern California
in the Big Eight-Pac 10 Challenge in
Los Angeles.
Two teams in the Huskers’ Big
Eight schedule — Colorado and Okla
homa — also were mentioned by coach
Terry Pettit as preseason Top 20 teams.
Nebraska plays each of those teams
twice this season.
