Offensive line
adds mobility to
complement size

The Nebraska offensive line is
expected to be its usual weighty self
this season with a new feature —
mobility.
The Comhuskers, whose starting
five offensive linemen average 6-foot
3 and 294 pounds, will mix size with
speed in an effort to help the back
field defend its 1991 NCAA team
rushing title.
Nebraska offensive line coach Milt
Tcnopir said the speed on this year’s
offensive line had impressed him.
“We’ve worked hard this summer
and should be a good bunch, and
we’ve got better mobility than we’ve
had,” Tcnopir said.
The line, which has three starters
returning from last year’s 9-2-1 Ne
braska team, is ready for the Huskcrs’
season opener Sept. 5 against Utah,
Tcnopir said.

One of those players is junior left
tackle Lance Lundbcrg, a 6-foot-4,
300-pound Wausa native.
Lundberg said experience gained
last year should benefit the Huskcrs.
“We’re going to have a little more
experience than we anticipated for
this year,” Lundbcrg said.
He said the line was anxiously
awaiting the upcoming season.
“We’re big and strong and hungry,
so we’re looking forward to it,” Lund
bcrg said.

5, 315-pound sophomore Rob Zat
cchka. Last season, Zalcchta split
lime with Lundbcrg at left guard and
earned a start in Nebraska’s 18-9 win
over Arizona Slate.
Others returning starters in the line
include second-team All-American
Will Shields, a 6-1,305-pound senior
from Lawton, Ok la., at right guard
and center, Jim Scott.
Shields, a two-year starter, will
anchor the line. Behind him is Joel
Wilks, a sophomore from Hastings,
I and BrendenSlai, a junior from Yorba
Linda, Calif.
bcott, who is 6-2 and 265 pounds,
is a senior from Anslcy who earned
honorable mention All-Big Eight
honors last season.
Nebraska football coach Tom
Osborne compared Scott with some
of the best centers who have played
for the Huskers.
“Jim Scott probably hasn’t been
mentioned prcscason All-Big Eight,’’
Osborne said. “But we’ve had some
great centers and Jim Scott can play
with Jake Young, Rick Bonness, Mark
Traynowicz. He can play at that level
and is a very, very good football
player.’’
Scott will be backed by Terris
Chomey, a senior from Ituna, Sas
katchewan. Chomey, who had arthro
scopic knee surgery last October, was
listed at No. 2 in the post-spring depth
chart.
As for the newcomers at the other
two offensive line positions, sopho
more Zach Wiegert is the odds-on
favorite to win the starling job at right
tackle.
Wiegert, brother of last year’s All
Big Eight left tackle Erik Wiegert, is
Nebraska’s tallest starter on the line
at 6-5 and 310 pounds.
Osborne said the younger Wiegert
should play well this season.
Joel Gesky, a sophomore from
Midlothian, III., will back up Wiegert
at right tackle.
Osborne said it’s loo close to call
for Nebraska’s other spot on the line,
as Chris Zyzda.TJ. Slansky and Ken
Mchlin will compete for the left guard
spot.
