In most cases, the new albums were the same old rc-rcleases of I marginal quality recordings. Two exceptions, however, came out of Italy (the current world bootleg capital). “Many More Early Times,” on Insect Records, is a compilation of three early and well-noted concerts by the band. The first set of the col lection is a fantastic monaural re cording from Konscrthusct, Stock holm on March 14, 1969. The pcrtormancc is spectacular and is sought after largely due to the blis tering version of “Dazed and Con Courtesy of Insect Records “Many More Early Times” fused” and the rare performance of Olis Rush’s “I Goua Move.” The band uses the song as filler while Jimmy Page repairs a broken guitar siring. Plant takes his spot with some spec tacular blues harmonica and syrupy Mississippi Delta vocals. The next set was recorded the previous night at the Copenhagen Teen Club. Even though the recording quality is not as good as Stockholm, the performance is memorable, fea turing “As Long As I Have You,” which was a standard at early Led Zeppelin concerts. The final group of tracks on the album was recorded on June 15,1969 at Aeolian Hall in London. This is the best available recording of this highly regarded set. It includes “The Girl I Love,” a slinky vocal version of what eventually became “Moby Dick” on “Led Zeppelin II,”and an amateurish cover of Eddie Cochran’s classic “Something Else.” The other standout bootleg of the summer of 1992 was “More Than Something Else,” both literally and figuratively. This album is as close to a definitive compilation of early Zeppelin rarities as any release to dale. The folks who pul this together must have pone to considerable effort both in assimilating rare source tapes and in screening out poor quality recordings. The highlights of this album are many. Not only docs it contain re cordings of “I Gotta Move,” “The Girl I Love” and “Something Else,” mentioned above, but also numerous other live and studio rarities. The third track of the album is an excellent stereo recording of “As Long As I Have You” from the Fillmore West in San Francisco on January 9, 1969. During the 17-minutc track, the band jams through several classic covers including “I’m A Man,” which Page performed frequently with the Yardbirds. Also included is a version of Buddy Guy’s “Siltin and Thinkin’,” recorded at the Fillmore in April of the same year. The rich blues of the song re veals the roots of later Zeppelin stan dards, such as “Since I’ve Been Lov ing You” and “Tea For One.” Undoubtedly, the showcases of the album arc oultakcs from the 1971 rehearsals at Headley Grange when the band was creating its untitled fourth album. The listener gets a rare chance to hear Page recording an all-acoustic demo of “Stairway to Heaven” that shows the song in its infancy. Also included from the same source tapes is an untitled acoustic track that Page must have recorded when he was in a really good mood. The up beat sunshiny song is atypical of Page’s usually serious lone. The last two rarities of note arc an early demo of “No Quarter,” which sounds little like the album version and a cover of Jony Mitchell’s “Woodstock” excerpted from the jam in the middle of “Dazed and Con fused” at a 1975 London show. Any rabid Zeppelin fan who just can’t get enough of the band will undoubtedly find these albums to be worthwhile investments. Both should be in print and a vai lablc through early next year. — Carter Van Pell WE'RE FIGHTING FOR VOURLIFE American Heart Association ^ Harman's Camera & Video Welcome Back Students ( 15% OFF Supplies ^ for Photographic Classes L_& PhotonnishingJ SERVICES AVAILABLE: • 1-Hour Colorprints • Prints from Slides • 1-Hour Enlargements • Reprints • 1-Hour E-6 Slides • Copy Old Photographs • 1-Hour Black & White • Film Kodak • Cameras-Accessories • Camera & Video Rentals- • Passport Photos • Camera & Video Repairs liiiiii ii ii j 1422 "O" Street, Lincoln Nebraska 68508 N _Mon-Fri 9-5:30 Sat. 9-3:00 474-2402 )
