Mattea, McFerrin are highlights of 1992-93 Lied season By Shannon Uehling Senior Editor The 1992-93 season promises to be a busy one for the Lied Center for Performing Arts. With 52 scheduled performances on the main stage alone, the Lied Center, located at 12th and R Streets, is a Lincoln resource for cultural entertainment. Highlighting this year’s season are shows such as the return perform ances of“Les Miscrablcs’’and Bobby McFcrrin, and a performance by country vocalist Kathy Mattca. The Artists of the Lied Festival opens Oct. 17. This is the largest festival of its kind in the region and features special performances and events. University of Nebraska and Ne braska Wesleyan students are entitled to half-price tickets to all events ex cept those listed above, but “Les Miscrables” tickets arc available to students for $5 off the regular price. Tickets will be available for indi vidual sale Monday. •The season opener, “The Incom parable Red Stars Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble,” is the first of 52 main-stage performances on Sept. 16. The 130-member ensemble brings its music, choreography and costumes to Lincoln from the Commonwealth of Independent Slates during its first North American tour. • On Sept. 26, Pat Methany, virtu oso guitarist, composer and producer, will present a concert featuring music from his new album. • Popular country vocalist Kathy Matlca, winner of two Best Female Country Vocal Performance Grammy Awards, will perform Oct. 11 on a special “Country Sunday.” Mallea is known for such songs as “Where Have You Been.” • “From the Towers of the Moon,” a newly commissioned creation from the Minnesota Opera that tells the Japanese fable of the Shining Prin cess, will open the Lied Center’s third annual Artists of the Lied Festival Oct. 17. • On Ocl. 23 and 27, the American String Quartet will perform the first of its scries of Kimball Recital Hall concerts. • “An Evening with Claire Bloom,” two different theatrical performances about the way women arc seen by Shakespeare and Bronte, will be pre sented Ocl. 24 and 25. •The Hubbard Street Dance Com pany, a jazz-dance company with a ballet base, will perform Oct. 30 and 31. • The world-renowned Stars of the Bolshoi Ballet will perform Nov. 4 and 5. The performances will fea ture Prima Ballerina Assoluta Ekater ina Maximova and her partner, Pre mier Danseur and leading Bolshoi choreographer Vladimir Vasiliev. •The Royal Philharmonic Orches tra will close the Artists of the Lied Festival with a concert under the di rection of Vladimir Ashkenazy on Nov. 12. •The American Indian Dance Thca ler, the first company to present American Indian culture in a profes sional theatrical environment, will perform Nov. 20. •Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” featuring Victorian costumes and sets, will be presented in partnership with University Theatre Dec. 10 and 13. •The Minneapolis Children’s Thea ter will present Rudyard Kipling’s classic story about a boy raised by wolves, “The Jungle Book,” Jan. 8 and 9. •Coming to Lincoln Jan. 14 and 15 is the New York production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” a Tony Award winning musical. • inc v lcnna ^namoer urcncsira under the direction of Philippe Entre mont, premier conductor and soloist, will perform Jan. 22. •Reluming to the Lied Jan. 23 is Bobby MeFerrin, with his unusual styles of composition. •The Ballet Folclorico Nacional dc Mexico will bring its folk dance and musical heritage to Lincoln Feb. 10. A preperformance event, El Mejor, will feature the foods and cultural heritage of Mexico. •The St. Louis Symphony Orches tra, under the direction of acclaimed director and conductor Leonard Slat kin, will perform Feb. 13. The or chestra is the second oldest in the country. •The San Francisco-based travel ing troupe, the Pickle Family Circus, I will bring its juggling, tumbling and balancing performers to the Lied Feb. 20 and 21. •Soprano Leontyne Price will per form Feb. 28. Her repertoire could range from spirituals to classical arias. •On March 6 and 7, the widely acclaimed Mark Morris will lead his dance company in a choreographed dance presentation. •“Lcs Miscrablcs” is scheduled for a return engagement March 9 through 14. The play, based on Victor Hugo’s novel of the same name, tells the tale of the turbulent 19th century in France. •On March 21, Montreal's The atre Sans Fil (Theater Without Strings) will present J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” a story of trolls and dwarfs. •On April 13, the Lied presents the evening performance of Isaac Stem, Cho-Liang Lin, Jaime Laredo, Mi chael Tree, Yo-Yo Ma and Sharon Robinson, some of the country’slx>sl classical performers. •Tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins brings his four decades of jazz expe rience to Lincoln April 16. •Pilobolus, a dance group that formed in a college dance class, will perform April 23 and 24.
