Missouri awaits the arrival of
Nebraska’s baseball team this week
end as the two Big Eight foes prepare
to meet in Columbia, Mo.
The Tigers are 21-15 overall and
7-9 in the conference, having played
twice as many conference games as
the Comhuskcrs.
Nebraska is third in the Big Eight
with a 5-3 mark. The Huskcrs arc 24
14 on the season.
Missouri and Nebraska’s only
common Big Eight opponent so far
this season is Oklahoma State.
Nebraska split its four-game scries
with the league’s first-place team last
weekend, while the Tigers were swept
at home by the Cowboys.
Huskcr coach John Sanders said
his team must be prepared for a lough
weekend.
“Missouri is a good, solid ball dub,”
Sanders said. “They’re playing well
right now and we expect a real com
petitive weekend.”
The Tigers lost to Oklahoma State
to begin their conference schedule.
Since then, Missouri has split with
Iowa State, taken three games from
Kansas State and split with confer
ence co-leader Oklahoma.
Missouri is fifth in this week’s
standings, behind Iowa State (6-6).
Nebraska won’t set a goal of a
scries split or taking three of four
games, Sanders said.
“We’re looking to go every pitch
at a lime,” Sanders said. “We’re not
trying to get into prognostication.
(We’ll) let the score take care of it
self.”
Sanders said the Huskcr pitching
rotation for the weekend would be
Mike Zajcski, Jason Beauchamp, John
Izumi and Josh Bullock.
Missouri’s scheduled rotation
consists of John Dctlmcr (3-2 with a
4.60 earned run average), Chris Ebbs
(2-3, 6.82), Mike Munro (2-4, 6.26)
and Jason Mcyhoff (3-0, 3.44).
The Huskers will counter the Mis
souri staff with the second-highest
batting average in the Big Eight at
.319. Meanwhile, Nebraska pitchers
are holding the opposition to a .251
mark.
Dale Hagy is leading the Huskers
with a .375 average and eight home
runs. Hagy and Scan McKenna (.345)
arc tied for the team lead in runs
All-Time: Missouri leads the series 101-76.

shape for rcgionals.”
The 17-lcam field in ihcOpryland
Invite will play three Tounds at the
Spring House Golf Club in Nashville.
Romjuc said his team had not yet
reached its peak this spring.
“Hopefully wc arc rounding into
shape by now,” Romjuc said. “It’s
still early for us compared to some
other teams, but we can’t do anything
about that. Either you produce or you
don’t, and it’s time to produce.”
Junior Craig Poet has developed
into a consistent golfer, Romjuc said.
“Craig has been our best player all
spring,” he said. “He’s played well
enough that if the team doesn’t make

Oregon trail
to lead NU
to ‘big’ meet,
coach says
By John Gardner
Staff Reporter
The Nebraska track and field teams
head to the rainy and moderate weather
of the Pacific Northwest this week
end to compete in one of their tough
est meets of the season.
The Comhuskcrs will make their
second appearance at the Pepsi Invi
tational at Hayward Field on the
University of Oregon campus in
Eugene, Ore.
The host of the meet is Oregon, a
collegiate track and field power.
Other teams competing in the meet
include Washington and Northern
Arizona.
Coach Gary Pepin said he and his
teams were excited about this meet
— especially about the chance to
compete against Oregon.
Oregon always has one of the
best teams in the nation,” he said.
“They have everything. They have
one of the best facilities in the world.
They have great athletes and excel
lent crowd support, some of the best
in the country.”
Pepin also said this meet would be
extremely important for his teams.
“Outside of the conference meet,
this may be our biggest meet of the
season,” Pepin said. “It will give us a
chance to see athletes who arc not in
the Big Eight and are of national ►
caliber.”
And it’s vital for his teams to be at
their best, he said.
“We’ll need lo have real good,
competitive efforts in a meet like
this,” Pepin said. “A lot of the kids
will be doubling, tripling up, even
running in four events. This meet will
give us a real good idea of where we
arc at this point in the season, both at
the conference and national levels.”
Pepin said he had a pretty good
idea of who would run what, but
changes would still be made, he said.
“Right now, wc have everyone fairly
zeroed in on what events they will be
in, but come conference lime, some
options still remain,” he said. “Wc
still have the problem with expenses
and not having enough meets where
there’s good competition.”
In addition to the crew traveling to
Oregon, Nebraska sent two dccath
Ictcs and one hcptalhlctc to the Kan
sas Relays in Lawrence, Kan.
As of Thursday, Rick Schwicgcr
had a large lead in the men’s decath
lon. Gene Paulsen also is competing
in the decathlon and Michelle Shoe
maker is entered in the heptathlon.
