baby stuck in a car and having to
rescue it.
“I knew the game was on the
line, and if he would have made the
dunk, they would have won.”
The game went into overtime,
and Nebraska eventually won, 81
79, on a last-second three-pointer
by Jamar Johnson.
Chubick said he had known bas
ketball all his life.
His father, Bruce Sr., played bas
ketball for Briar Cliff College in
Sioux City, Iowa.
That early exposure rubbed off
on the younger Chubick.
“I’ve been playing ball ever
since I was old enough to walk,
maybe before,” he said. “My
parents said they had a little hoop
hooked onto my crib.
“My dad was kind of a role
model for me growing up.”
Chubick lived in Montana fora
while and said he played a different
form of street ball.
“A logging company in Montana
skinned down their poles,” he said.
“So we just nailed a board up to
that. It was much easier than going
into town and buying a pole.”
Chubick moved to Atkinson
when he was in the eighth grade. He
attended West Holt High School
and left his mark.
In his final two seasons, Chubick
was tabbed as the top player in Ne
braska, leading West Holt to 45
consecutive wins and one state
championship.

“After the game was over, though;
my dad’s criticism was more
constructive, and I usually knew
already if I played a bad game.”
Because of his father’s motiva
I’m happy with the progress I’ve made so far. But
I’m not completely satisfied. Right now, I’m more
concerned with my overall game, like grabbing
more rebounds and keeping the turnovers down.

NU men's basketball player
As a junior, he averaged 33
points and 13.7 rebounds to lead his
team to a 24-0 record and the Class
C-l championship. The following
year, he upped those totals, averag
ing 33.2 points and 16.7 rebounds a
game and received Nebraska
Gatoradc Player of the Year honors.
Chubick also was a two-time USA
Today Nebraska Player of the Year
selection.
All along, he was coached by his
father.
Chubick said it was lough at
limes, because he was the team
leader. But it wasn’t all bad.
“If things were going bad, my
friend Chris Peacock and I usually
took all the blame,” Chubick said,

with much intensity.
After graduating from West
Holt, Chubick chose to play college
basketball at Nebraska instead of
Creighton, Texas-Arlington or Wis
consin.
Now that he has settled into his
starting role and gets more playing
time, Chubick said he just wanted
to keep improving.
“I’m happy with the progress
I’ve made so far,” he said. “But I’m
not completely satisfied. Right now,
I’m more concerned with my
overall game, like grabbing more
rebounds and keeping the turnovers
down.
“It was a lot different situation in
high school. I was the tallest guy on
the court, so I was mostly called on
--
to score.”
Chubick’s game is becoming
well-rounded. This season, he is
averaging 7.1 points, 5.5 rebounds
and one blocked shot per game in
about 20 minutes of playing time.
Since Big Eight games began,
those numbers have increased. He
has averaged 7.2 points, 6.6
rebounds and one block in 23.6
minutes of playing time per outing.
Chubick landed his first starting
assignment against Kansas, the
same game in which he blocked
Jamison’s shot. And he has used his
32-inch vertical jump to his
advantage.
When an undefeated Oklahoma
State team came to Lincdln earlier
this season, Chubick came off the
bench to cover All-Big Eight player
Byron Houston.
“In that game, one of the ball
boys bet me a pop that I couldn’t
score on Houston,” he said. “So,
when 1 dunked over him, the ball
boy asked me if I wanted my pop,
and I told him no, saying I just
wanted to show myself I could do
it.”
Nebraska went on to upset the
Cowboys 85-69.
Chubick’s aggressive style of
play play got him selected for
Missouri coach Norm Stewart’s
1991 Big Eight Select Team that
toured Italy in the summer. Chubick
played with such players as Mis
souri’s Anthony Feeler, Oklahoma’s
Jeff Webster, Kansas’ Rex Walters
and Iowa State’s Justus Thigpen.
“It was pretty fun playing for
Norm,” Chubick said. “He was very
loose during the trip. He wasn’t
quite as businesslike as he is during
the Big Eight season.”
Chubick said the tour lasted right
up until the fall semester began.
“I only got an hour of sleep
before I had to go to class on
Monday,” he said.
Now that the 1991-92 regular
season is over, Chubick said the
NCAA loumamcnt was the main
thing on his mind.
“We’ve done a lot more than
anyone expected of us this year,” he
said. “At the beginning of the
season, I set the goal for us to make
the tournament, and 1 really think
we should be in.”
Chubick traveled to Minneapolis
last season for Nebraska’s first
round NCAA game but didn’t play.
He said just being there was a big
thrill for him, although Nebraska
lost 89-84.
“Going and losing in the first
round of the NCAAs is much better
than winning the NIT (National
Invitational Tournament),” Chubick
said. “As a kid, you watch the
NCAA tournament and dream of
playing in it.
“1 didn’t get to play in it last
year, but it will be a different tunc
this year.”
